Despite being told not to do it numerous times, local dealer sawed off my accelerator pedal for that safety recall. They offered to replace it. I said no - they might screw things up even worse.

Howdy all, OP here. Just wanted to thank everyone for their feedback. You did exactly what I hoped you would by giving me lots of good things to think about and ask the dealership about.

After it happened, I really wanted two things: (1) a thorough description of what happened, what got damaged, and what got repaired/replaced/repainted; and (2) a guarantee that if anything pops up later as a result of the damage, that the dealership would be responsible to fix it. The dealership told me that they have turned this incident in to their insurance so that there will be a record of everything I requested above. Haven't seen the paperwork yet so we'll see, but I pick up my truck this afternoon. Will let you know...

Newlife, you proposed the exact scenario I was thinking about when trying to figure out what to do about this. If I damaged my neighbor's mailbox, of course I'd pay to fix it. What happens next is where we disagree. I would still feel like I owed him a little something extra so I'd also buy the guy a decent bottle of single malt or Texas whiskey for his trouble (and to be a good neighbor).

Wasn't that what got him into this mess. The term "factory trained technicians" also has diminished value based on how many simpleton mistakes like this occur at dealership after dealership.

Exactly! This is what is wrong with the world, everybody wants something for nothing. I would be happy with my vehicle being fix back to the way I brought it into the dealership. Accidents happen, god forbid it was you who did this now you got some guy all over your ass for handouts.

If that is the case then I agree nothing needs paid in addition to fixing his truck.

Maybe the OP can let us know how "asking nicely" goes in terms of getting more.

I'd bet a week's pay it will get a smile and a head shake. If he insists, the smile will disappear, and the head-shake joined by a finger pointing to the door.

I'm not in the service world, per se. But I am in the real world; and I've been on the periphery of union-management disputes. Nope, I'm not rah-rah pro-union, blindly; but I've seen the conflicts.

And people don't fork over money because they're asked nicely. They do so if it's to their benefit to do so; or if they will be hurt by failing to do so.

If they are running it through insurance then I would expect this will probably show up on CarFax. I would talk to them about that concern as it will end up shafting you on resale value. Otherwise I would be inclined to agree with the rest that if they fix it to how it was before then that should be good. Maybe a free oil change or small credit for future parts or service, but I wouldn't be demanding too much as people will make mistakes and they seem like they are willing to make good on it.

Unbelievably the exact same thing happened to me but I drove it all the way home. Felt like driving on ice and when I got home found 3 nuts missing and the other 3 barely hand tightened. Made them send a wrecker to get it back to the shop. My brand stinkin new Tacoma, 1st oil change like yours. I now drive 30 minutes further away to another dealer for service.

You may want to contact Toyota directly, and let them know of your wonderful service experience.

Apparently Toyota is putting the fear of God into its dealers. I bought my 2015 on a trip (long story) and the sales people were all over me to please-please-PLEASE fill out the questionnaire and let them know you were satisfied.

And when I got it home and needed minor service (light burned out with 300 miles on it) I expected the dealer (who wouldn't deal with me weeks earlier) to slough me off. Instead I got no-appointment, no-waiting service - and a request to please-please-PLEASE let Toyota know you were pleased with your warranty service.

That is something new. So...pass it on; and the ijits who don't know to screw wheels back on will be finding other work.

^Not fear of god. The sales people get a greater bonus at month's end if they scored high on your questionaire.

Not quite the same as OP's situation, is it? ;)

And of course the mailbox repair has no effect on the house's depreciation. A repainted vehicle door does.

With more and more of these reports, I've become paranoid about the free oil change for two years thing. My truck has less than 1000 miles on it, and I'll be doing my oil changes myself. All I'll be out is my time and a filter, as I would have to provide them with the Mobil 1 anyway. At that rate anyway, I'd trust a gas station mechanic more than a pimple face puke at the dealership.

My dealer damaged my new Taco also... They drilled holes in the bumper to install their advertising licence plate. I'm pissed about that because that was certainly NO accident!

this is whats SUCKS about toyota! each dealership is privately owned, so there is no corporate entity to call to force them to do anything :( if they didnt want to do anything, no one but a lawyer or insurance company could force them to do anything! (thats the difference between lexus and toyota and why they tax you so much on a lexus, the cars and trucks are the same, but lexus is corporate, so anything happens if you call corporate, it gets fixed and corporate pays the bill)

my advice, make sure YOU are allowed to pick the shop that does repairs. do your research and pick a good custom car shop so the paint is perfect. make the dealership provide ALL NEW oem parts, ANY part that was even scratched, have replaced new. if the fender flare had a nick or fender had a scratch in the paint, or by the wheel flying off it caused a fruit fly in nigeria to fart which scared a racoon next to the truck and the racoon took off running and splashed mud on the mud flap, id demand a new mud flap :) demand new parts!

if they do not comply, ask for the contact information for their "auto repair and garage liability" insurance carrier. that may perk up their ears a bit, trust me they dont want a claim!

sorry to hear this happened, i hope it all gets taken care of correctly.

Good call but go to the dealer and get their oil filters so if the motor has issues they cannot blame it on that. They are worth running performance and costwise + the use of factory parts to block any of their nonsense refusal to warranty the truck. This also sidesteps big waste of time to go get "free" (NOT) oil changes and the bad things that can happen having stupid uncaring turds doing haphazard "work" on your truck.
