hey guys, i was very lucky to land a job recently at AAMCO trancsmissions. i start monday and was wandering what would be the best time to ask the boss for the 24th off. there is an event i have had in plan for a month or two going on that weekend, i am not really accustomed to this new boss, i dont wanna seem like a lousy employee for requesting a day off my first day at work, but i dont wanna put him in a bind by asking him too late either, so about when should i ask

    oh 24th of oct oops!

If you absolutely need the day off I'd still ask sooner rather than later. Just explain that it's something you had planned for awhile and hate to ask off so soon and then hope for the best. You don't want to wait and pull a d-bag move of having to have him change the schedule, not to mention the later you wait the less likely it will be that he will even give you the day off.

[QUOTEyou should have asked for that day off when you got hired...dont take the day off after the fact..just makes you look bad ][/QUOTE]

+1 billion. Before I hire anyone I ask them if they have any appointments, court dates, personal issues coming up that I need to know about that would affect their future work schedule. Nothing pisses me off worse than a new hire who comes up to me after being recently hired and asks for a day off. I usually tell them they can have two days off a week and it's called Saturday and Sunday.

You should have told your employer before you were hired they would have been alot more accommodating. Now that it's too late though inform them immediately and ask if it's possible. It might just depend on who much you value this job.

show your motivation and dedication to the job for about a week and then ask. its hard to find good workers these days, he'll see your worth keeping around and be glad to give you the day off.

Don't unless you have to. There are so many people that lost their jobs that will give an arm and leg for a position to work.

Planning aside- It's bad form to walk in and ask for time off right off the bat. Have they told you about how the schedule?? That would help. You can try to find someone to change shifts with once that roster is out....but I wouldn't stay looking for time off yet.

How do they schedule you? Do work M-Fri at set hours or do the days/hours you work change weekly or whatever?

Although I am leaning with the majority here I also understand that this may not be a big issue.....or it could....

I would ask some of your coworkers when you get there on Monday and ask what they think and how your boss is about this kind of thing. He may be really cool and schedule you differently. Exactly how important is this event? Is it an immediate family wedding kind of important or a not-so-important-social gathering-but-I-would-really-like-to-go-to-b/c-its-gonna-be-a-ton-of-fun kind of event?

If it's not something you have to go to I wouldn't bother

Hopefully you mean the 24th of October?

As those have said, its easier before to get this all straighten out but since you didn't & you are already starting, I woud ask if there is a employee handbook that goes over the policies, you know, explains the benefits and what is expect of you as an employee. Look there first, it may outline how to ask for time off. Good luck with the new job tomorrow. :)

Did you already know when you were hired about needing the day off?

If yes, why didn't you mention it then?

If no, you definitely put your hardly earned reputation at risk by asking for a day off so soon.

That said, life happens and sometimes it doesn't always happen to plan and maybe a job where your employer isn't agreeable isn't the job for you anyway.

However, the safest bet is to flat out cancel whatever plan you had (unless it's a wedding) if your job is that important to you...

Wait a second...you start Monday and need Thursday off?

    NO WAY.

If your job means anything to you, cancel your plans...
