Hey guys, im 16 and I still cant decide what I want to do when I get out of school? My dad told me about supposed benefits of a Ga Game warden: House, work truck, maybe atv? I have been looking on the internet at what you have to do and what is expected. The college part doesn't seem bad but all of the tasks that are needed. I love the outdoors and hunting and fishing but the website said you will be working so much you will never see your family and you will not be able to hunt or fish much. It also said the job was like a cop, you had to investigate, report, testify, and patrol the land you are assigned. It really does seem like a hand full.
Now on to the Semi Truck Driver, I love to be by myself and I kind of like to drive. If I do become one, I want to go all over the U.S. and see all of the scenery but I don't want to to have the same route. It seems like an alright paying career, but you will defiantly not see you family for a while. I do not have a girlfriend, I would like one but im so shy its just not really likely so I geuss the family part is kind of out.

So if you have any of these careers please let me know if I have the right info on them. If you think of one I might be interested in let me know also.

Shok Industries 2/0 big 4 upgrade and sound deadener.
How did you come down to those 2 options out of the plethora available? You've got time but start making the right choices to what you WANT to do because it honestly sounds like someone picked those for you and you said okay. Whether it's college, trade school, military, peace corps, bumming across the world, your choices will reflect who you are and where you go in life.

If those were my only choices I'd choose game warden for sure.

Well the availability of game warden jobs are few and far between. I think those who love it stick with past retirement, and there aren't many who end up not liking it, so job availability is slim there. Expect to spend several years on a waiting list to join the work force there. Secondly, I don't really think the pay is all that good for all that you have to do/risk. Just my $.02

Thanks guys, well my dad brought up the game warden and it seemed like it was what I wanted to do, but the average pay for it is $17 an hour, all the stuff you have to do is a little much for that pay. The truck driver part I watch a guy on youtube and it seems like he loves it, he lives in Canada though. He gets weeks off sometimes and he gets to do what ever he wants in that time, but he said the company he works for is really good to him and all companies aren't that way I suppose.

Your young. You'll most likely change your mind a bunch of times before comimg to any one conclusion as to what your career will be.

Many people who go to college change their majors through their schooling.

Life is a fun ride and you'll likely find yourself doing something you've never thought of for a living down the road. At your age I'd be more worried about doing well in school and making memories with your friends. I have friends that are game wardens and they work long hours for little pay...but of the two options that you listed that would get my vote.

Life is a long ride. Enjoy it. Go to school work hard, get good grades and see where life takes you. Explore all of your options, career center, college both two and four year, and the military. Don't narrow your focus so much on two things. Esp when they are two things you don't seem super interested in.

I would not sit and worry about what you will make per hour. I would figure out what in life you enjoy doing, and find something related to that.

I promise you that you do not want to go the route of truck driver. Go to college and work on getting a transfer or something, then I guarantee you will figure it out. I didn't finally make a choice until I was about 20, and I can still change my mind if I want to.

True. But you have years of experience.

The only companies hiring a green driver, or one out of it for some time...will work them like mules. The new HOS for OTR drivers with aggressive dispatchers are HELL.

I drove in 1990-91; it wasn't so bad. With the economy what it is, I took it up again in 2011. I simply couldn't DO it! Go-go-GO...eat at Subway, ALWAYS - because we had a fuel contract with Pilot. Urinate into cups. The long rest always seemed to come where there was no wash or food facilities; and generally when I wasn't in cycle to sleep - like, sunrise after fingerprinting a load.

I just moved to a new state - and surrendered my CDL. I'd rather go to prison sticking up a liquor store, than drive OTR.

And unless I live like that for 36 months, I can't even APPLY for a job like you have. Nor can the OP - of the choice, he's much better as a State Fish & Game warden.

Dude, you're 16. Why are you aspiring to be a truck driver or a game warden? There are so many excellent career choices better than those, many of which don't require going to college.

To add onto that, if you're 16 and you are considering an engineering education so you can make off road bumpers, you'll probably be best off concentrating on graduating high school and finding a job or going to college (and still finding a job). Get a little wet behind the ears in the real world, see what your interests are later, and what your goals are.

You are considering major life decisions but I don't think your mind is ready for that kind of thought at this time.

Just a thought--COAST GUARD--do a litle research. Do not know of a Coastie that did not like it. Retire EARLY-good stations or sea duty--you will see a lot.
It is what you make of it!

Dude don't sweat the job thing. I am in school and have been through 5 ideas of majors. I finally feel that I am supposed to be a chaplain.
