Don't know what your insurance company or your state law is...but I have, in the past, taken cash in lieu of wheeling the car into one of their connected repair shops. It may be times have changed in the last ten years; but the last time I had a claim, two years ago, with State Farm...they pressured me, sort of, into using one of their "preferred" shops. Since it was a local shop with a good rep, I agreed.

I COULD have used another shop, but the amount paid would have been determined by adjuster. If the shop didn't agree, and I wanted that shop, I would have paid the difference.

Years earlier I had a claim on a truck...the damage was significant but everything was functional. I took the cash and sold the damaged truck. That was 1996, State Farm again.

Your company's adjuster will probably determine what they will pay for a bumper. If you go aftermarket, whatever the difference is, is yours.

I found out today that my insurance company doesn't send the check to me. Instead they send it electronically to who's doing my repairs. I know they do it to make it easier on everyone but in this case it makes things a little more difficult for going aftermarket. Now I have to explain the situation to who's doing my repairs instead of just purchasing everything myself :frusty:

I've never been one to believe in them either. Ive been told a few times that they don't work over 40mph.

Oh trust me I will, if I can get it ordered haha :D

it's been a long time since I took Cash - and then it was with later regret. Perhaps this has changed but please be sure to understand what $$ you actually get. When I got mine they severely discount the payout if you took cash. This law may have changed?? Also, after a more recent accident, the insurance adjuster had to inspect vehicle to be sure it WAS fixed as agreed. IF not they would have taken that value from any future claims (i.e., value of vehicle dropped to ins Co.).

Is that legal in your state?

Ask and find out. In many states it is not.

Deer whistles: I've read the "debunking" sites. Probably true, perhaps not...BUT...

...if you look at diagrams of how the air actually FLOWS OVER a car, you'd know that deer whistles on the BUMPER...do NOTHING. There is a solid mass of compressed air buffeting forward of the leading edge of the car...it's why, when you're slowing to a stop in the rain, water will rush forward off the hood, and then hang in the air before launching back up. It's that mass of air.

On the roof by the top of the windshield, better location. But even then, you have to consider whether whatever whistle they make is not drowned out by the buffeting of air forward of the truck. Sound is carried in air, of course.

A better test, and maybe this has been done, would be to identify the sound range those whistles make when wind is blowing through them - and then have roadside equipment to listen and see if sound is actually being heard in those high ranges. I'd bet not.

Maybe they only work in Ohio? Like I said I've seen them stop in their tracks several times and turn and run the other way while on my way to the lake at dawn and dusk. Take that fact along with before I got them I'd hit 2 deer. No hits since that last one 12 years ago.
    Again, waddya got to lose?
I'll give up my deer whistle when they pry it from my cold , dead, Taco bumper! :D

When some punk kid smacked my front bumper, I had a few shops do an estimate, then their adjuster did an estimate. They came within about $50 bucks of each other, with the ins company being in the middle. The ins co asked who I was going to get to do the work, and I told them I didn't know. So they just sent me the check. I went Relentless. I paid about 250 more for my bumper than I got from the ins. company.

This is pretty much how mine is going. If everything goes to plan I'll only have about $200 out of pocket.

Deer whistles used to be given away by insurance companies about 10 years ago. But anyways that sucks your truck has to get fixed. I'd suggest you go talk to the shop who will be doing the repairs and also check the legality of plate bumpers. In some states they are illegal for on road use.

I am unaware of this, they should be legal down in the south. I've got a couple buddies that drive into town literally everyday and hasn't had anything said to them.

Could be anything - the hum of the tires, maybe.

Like I mentioned earlier...if deer whistles work, they WHISTLE.

Which means a recorder should be able to record it. Whether or not if the human ear can hear it, digitalized instruments can. Better than deer.

There are no tests showing that deer whistles emit whistling. So...there ya have it.
