    None... sigh

I want to thank you for posting this, takes a lot of courage to talk openlydifficulties you are working through. Thankfully, I've never had a drinkingproblem, but I do have thoughts from deployments that creep up. My biggest helphas been, and always will be, my wife. Her and my son keep me grounded and onthe right track. Very inspirational, thanks again for posting.

I also have PTSD. Long story short, I was in pursuit of a stolen car. The suspect stopped his car and tried to take my head off with an AR15 from about 15 feet away. He fired 20 rounds at me. I shot him back. He's dead now. That incident, coupled with the others like RearView mentioned that can't be un-seen can really take a toll after a while.

The shooting was August 3rd, 2011. I knew I was in trouble when I started turning to alcohol just to be able to relax. When I wake up in the morning and the first thing I think about was having a glass of tequila, I knew something was wrong. August 3rd of this year was the night I had my last drink. I've decided to quit. So far so good.

RearView, if you ever need to talk about anything, feel free to PM me. I've been there.

That type of work would be tough. I don't think I could sleep at night after seeing things like that.

    Props to your sobriety!

    Middle of Sept 2012.

I just realized this thread is one year old yesterday.

I don't know if I've stated in the past or not. But the reason I keep the PTSD / Sobriety Thread linked in my signature is for me. Not for anyone else. I have to stare at that link every time I post something here. That's not to say that I don't want anyone clicking on the link and hopefully helping someone in the process. I do. But the original intent was to make me think about it every time I post.

What I've learned in the last year since posting this thread:

First... The amount of responses have been overwhelming. You men / women have been a great support for me and have given me a outlet. I know now that I'm not the only one with demons that haunt you.

I've learned to live one day at a time and enjoy each day that I'm allowed to remain on this earth.

I've learned that the further you get from "your" own personal rock bottom, the more perspective you gain from how you got there in the first place. I'm not remotely the same person I was before. It was / is truly a life changing event that required a lot of persistence and help from friends and family.

And most importantly... I've learned that I had to ask for help. Which to me was a huge hurdle to jump. I have made it to where I am personally accountable to everyone I know.

I wish none of this would have ever happened. I'm embarrassed, ashamed, and the guilt I feel will never go away. But on the other hand, it did happen, and I'm glad it did. It has made me a better person in the long run. And for that I'm thankful.

So, thank all of you for all the responses / PM's over the last year. It is truly a testament as to how good this community is. On a truck forum no less.

    In all sincerity, Thank you!

Thank you for posting this RearviewMirror! I too have recently decided to quit after 6 years, which started off as one or two drinks a week and turned into drinking one or two a night after work. For me, I had lost my job earlier this year, and started using it to "self-medicate" from the frustration. Then when I found a job (actually 2), I was working every day and using that as an excuse.

I know I have not been clean as long as most of your folks (it sounds like), but this thread is inspiring to me. I hope to continue on a sober lifestyle.

Good for you. That is my hope for you also. It is a day to day process but as time goes on it gets much easier I promise.

You know, the hardest thing for people to do is own up to their actions, everyone faces that fear. For you to have faced that fear, overcome it, and then let others know about it, not for praise or pride, but for the offer of help to another person, takes much more of a man than you would think. I'm glad that you have overcome your issues and have, more than likely, helped many others in one way or another. Im glad you found your road to recovery and are still on it.

My mother just commited suicide because of her alcohol addiction. We never thought it was that bad. I remember seeing this thread a few months back. I wish I made her read it as it could have helped. Who knows though. If you know a loved one is struggling, try your best to help them. No one should have to go through this.

Ah man swalters. Much Respect and Love to your Mom..

My mom is the most important person in my world. She is the only reason I still continue on, if she weren't around I would have taken the red carpet ride home long time ago. I dread the day if when that day ever comes. If not for my dog pack and my sister and niece and nephew, I would just plan on going when / if she did.

rearviewmirror: Shout out to you for sending out original thread about your life and your story. I used to tell my ex girlfriend that her alcoholism was no one else's business and she didnt have to tell people she was recovering alcoholic. I was kind of embarassed for her when she would tell people. Then not long after that I realized I was an alcoholic . I was 25. I had been drinking since I was 15. When I started going to AA meetings my friends thought I was crazy. Soon I became the same way: I don't give a F_ _ _ about what people think because I just don't care. I tell people straight up and have no shame about my story, (except for people I hurt). Still have shame for that. I don't have shame about my alcoholism.. But I try not to ever live in Ego and that is what I think stops people from writing posts like yours. Maybe they haven't let go of worrying about what people will think of them. For me it helps me to tell people how my selfish decisions back in the day harmed the ones I loved. I still feel a need to express that in some sort of attempt to become alright with it and forgive myself.

I could go through all the things that happened to me and all the ways I hurt other people, but that's for another day if I feel I need to get that out I will post on THIS forum. I'll have 12 years sobriety on the 28th of this month maybe that day I'll have something worth saying and post..
