I spend most of my day at work dealing with hazardous chemicals, PPE is a given at this point.

If you have extra pieces when you're done and it still works, you've made it more efficient.

Parts should be a breeze. IDK about parts for sale but I have done business with Gillis power in Hanson and they've been great.

Shrug. Working in a shop it was always amazing how much I had to nag guys working with brake & parts cleaner along with compressed air to wear their damn safeties.

I bought two lowers from Brownells. They are Bushmaster lowers and were 49.00 a piece plus some bs. It was 109.00 for the pair delivered

it is pretty simple Mike. I am sure you will be able to handle it. I would grab some carb cleaner spray and jump right in. The only issue could be the carb may not be serviceable.

My buddy had to buy a new carb for his craftsman and he also started useing that canned fuel from one of the big box stores. If you can drop the bowl and pull the float and needle and spray the hell out of it. If that doesnt work the you will be pulling the carb off and going deeper but I would try the easy way first

I saw your post in the AR BS thread and I agree with the responses. You can buy a stripped lower cheap, a decent parts kit for $50 - $75, a complete upper for $3-400 and then whatever furniture you want to finish it off. Or, you can spend more on certain areas to get what you want but you'll still be right around the same price as the Colt you're looking at (unless you go with a crazy expensive upper). With PSA, the PSA premium parts are supposed to be pretty good. PTAC has mixed reviews. For a first AR, I don't know if I'd be scared away from buying PTAC, I had one of their uppers and it looked pretty decent. All depends on what you want/need.

I've done my blower once, and my boat a few times. I always just get a kit off ebay. Honestly brand new ones are like $50 on ebay, might just be easier to get a new one instead of paying $25 for a rebuild kit.

I did the same thing for my generator. Bought a rebuild kit for $25 but even after soaking the carb, I couldnt pull some of the jets. Ended up rebuilding it and it still ran like shit. Bought a new carb for $50, should have done that from the beginning.

This will be my first AR, so not sure if I want a full build yet. I think I would rather get something assembled, shoot it, pull it apart and then build a custom piece.

I like the PSA set ups a lot, there are just a ton of options. I guess with an AR, the options are endless.

I'm not suggesting a full build up, just the lower. With pliers and a punch, a lower can be put together in about 20 minutes while watching a youtube instruction video. Even if you've never touched an AR before, they are very simple to assemble. The upper is a different story, which is why I'd suggest buying one (although building the upper is easy also, just requires special tools). Worst you're going to do is scratch the lower installing one of the roll pins.

Yup I scratched my first lower. It isnt a safe queen so I didnt mind the scratch figuring it would get more at the range and possibly in the woods

You need to have the stripped lowers sent to an FFL dealer, right?

When I got my Stihl Chainsaw the guy told me not use anything less than 93 octane in it because of the ethanol...it turns carbs to jelly...Everyone buys the 86 or 87 octane for lawn equipment but it's 10% ethanol and that absorbs water and ruins carburetors. The guys who do the service love it because it's guaranteed they'll have a line out the door every season switch between the mowers/chain saws/weed wackers/snow blowers.. So it's all I have been using for years in my power equipment...I just ran the mower out this weekend after draining the fuel tank and filled up the snow blower and ran it for a bit...
So far so good on the 93 octane..

I use fuel additives for that very reason. Otherwise, the carbs just gum up. I've been using 87 octane and Startron. 3 seasons with my snowblower and lawn mower so far, no rebuilds yet.

yes, then you need to fill out an FA-10 form when you finish your build.

And I need a class A license too because it has the capability of holding a high capacity mag. Stupid. Gotta wait til April!

    Thanks for the info, gents

Not sure if you necessarily need class A or not. You can't buy new high capacity mags for the AR in MA, they have to be pre-ban. Not sure if you can have one with a lower license or FID and only have 10 round mags. You'll have to do some research on that part. You have to make sure it's MA compliant with the 'evil features' though (flash hider, bayonet lug, collapsable stock, pistol grip, etc). Basically, because it has a pistol grip and removable magazine, you can't have any of the others.
Damn, put me on your nice list!
