I refer back to my fire suggestion

Fire would also help light up the dark spaces in the mechanism

I don't think I will be gainfully employed if i attempt any fire feats. Though my both of the bosses are out of the office today...

It's not designed to do that. Someone modified it, or it's broken. I'm betting on the former. That door hardware is pretty tough.

Mortise locks generally go in fire doors. If it can't latch, it defeats the purpose of the fire door. Schlage wouldn't design it like that.

You live in a state that's dark for six months out of the year and nobody in your office has a flashlight in their EDC?

So. I decided jamming in the screwdriver in places and prying at it was a good course of action. It was. Jammed something and BAM it came out

Here is my best guess. This door hasn't been used in a long time and it was opened and the mechanism got stuck. I was able to pry it from the back and it slowly came out. After a few motions in and out it seemed to be moving a lot more freely

    Good!

I bet it will work better the more you use it. Our locks like those here seem to have pretty beefy springs in them judging by how much effort it takes to push the lever. Surprised it got stuck to begin with.

    3 man cards revoked :p :D

Although I'm surprised that at least one woman doesn't have a light in her purse. Flashlights seem to be right up there with mace for the girls that work in my office.
