If it was recently purchased, your sister is listed as the registered owner with California DOJ. If it was purchased several years ago that may not be the case. It doesn't "mean" anything, just that if it turns up at a crime scene a cruiser will show up at your sisters house and start asking questions instead of yours. Not a problem if you are not a criminal and will maintain security over the pistol. There are many thousands of guns in cali that are not registered to any owner in any way, legally. Now let's say theoretically that some new law passes and they start sending cruisers out to collect "banned" pistols such as yours. They would go to your sisters house and inquire about it, and she would tell the truth about the horrible canoe accident where it sank to the bottom of the river. Again, I'm not a lawyer, but I don't like prison much either. http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/Firearms_Registration

I would disagree with you on it being good advice. Unfortunately the CA DOJ is out there to to get guns. Saying not to follow the laws and risk getting a felony, possible prison time and losing your right to own a gun is not good advice. There's civil disobedience and then there's testing waters you just don't want to. Can't blame the politicians for the laws, gotta blame each other for passing them

I fucking hate canoes. I've never had good luck with them. Lost a fuck-ton of firearms because of them too.

I hear kayaks are more stable but canoes can carry weight better.

    Life sucks.

That's not entirely true. Colorado is a prime example where politicians dreamed up some BS bills that were then forced through in the face of a strong citizen contingent that was VERY opposed to the bills. They went as far as to not allow anyone to speak on the house floor prior to voting & several representatives weren't even present knowing that hundreds and thousands were lined up to speak out against the bill. They hammered it through and the result was the first three recall votes in Colorado state history which resulted in 2 successful recalls and the 3rd stepped down before being recalled. I'm proud that we stood up for our rights and showed that a representative that didn't represent their constituents wasn't a representative at all but the laws are still on the books.

So you reserve civil disobedience for misdemeanors but unconstitutional felonies are cool with you? Unconstitutional is unconstitutional and maybe if more people in Kalifornia sacked up and stood up for their rights they might still have some. Just saying...

We better leave it at that as the conversation is getting political quickly.

The easy solution is to never bring a firearm into a boat without either attaching a flotation device to it or attaching it to the boat itself. Personally, I usually tie off a length of paracord (10 feet or so)to the gun, and tie the other end off to the gunwale.

Canoes can carry a LOT more weight with a lot more stability than a kayak, as long as you load them properly. Every example I've ever seen of an unstable canoe has been because of improper loading or people who don't understand keeping their weight centered. Even the cheap, poorly designed canoes are stable as long as you're careful about weight placement.

If more people in CA did that then it would be great.

For the second bolded part, my livelihood and support of my dependents depends on me being a little more cautious with my decisions. Being Active Duty, not only do I have to worry about the civillian courts I also have to worry about the UCMJ. The Coast Guard has some workforce shaping tools in place right now and I'd much rather retire from the service on my own terms rather than the CG say "thanks, but your services are no longer required".

Nobody is saying I can't own a gun and I should follow the rules when I transfer the weapon. I only wish that CA would shift from a may issue to a shall issue stance when it comes to CCW.

Just because you're not able to do your duty as it applies to unconstitutional laws for whatever reason doesn't mean you should also tell others not to. If people don't start taking steps in the right direction on multiple fronts (to include civil disobedience) then your wish will never become reality. We all have the government we deserve.

Sure, why wouldn't I be?
Whenever I hunt from a canoe I tie the gun off to the boat. A 10-foot length of paracord doesn't cost hardly anything, and it doesn't interfere with using the gun at all, but it might save me $400 (or a very cold swim) if I ever dropped it or knocked it off the boat somehow.

    I bounce it offa stuff.
My dad shot IPSC with a para-ordinance for years. He loved it. I shot it a few times but hell, I was maybe 13 and it went boom everytime I squeezed it and made holes in the paper. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one now, in fact I might just start shopping around after my next shotgun purchase.

This is all wonderful but anyone who talks about 'losing' their firearms in a tragic boating accident isn't being serious. It's a long-standing joke among firearm owners that all of their guns were lost in a tragic boating accident. I'm sure your suggestions are appreciated but nobody is actually losing $100k worth of firearms to the bottom of a lake somewhere.

    :homer:
I was hoping he wasn't being serious about losing guns off boats; he'd have to be exceptionally clumsy. I've heard the joke before but didn't catch the reference because I thought they were talking about canoes and kayaks. :notsure:

However, my previous statements are still true.

Think we are going to have to agree to disagree on this. My perception of my duty and what I interpet as constituntional and unconstitutional is what I view it as and it's not what you view it as.
