Awesome stuff.. I'm only building park benches at the moment..

Are you considering using UHMW as an isolator on your tire mount? I'd hate to see abrasion on a sidewall from rubbing on steel for a few thousand miles.

This is the nicest strap that I've ever owned. The ratchet is smooth as glass and breaks over and releases very easily. The strap material, stitching, and hooks are top notch. You won't be disappointed.

Good thought, but I don't think that will be an issue. I have a gap on either side of the tire for one, and the smooth side of a square tube shouldn't cause any issues.

Any thoughts about standing the tire holddowns straight up? It would give you more surface for welding and there doesn't seem to me to be much benefit to putting them at an angle - other than it looks cool.

By attaching the hoops at an angle, in plane with the strap, I have reduced the out of plane forces on the hoop. There's plenty of area to weld as I've basically created a bevel weld on the outside that ties in to the vertical portion of the square tube.

If I had placed them straight up in the middle of the tube I would have been pulling the hoops sideways over a flat plate. That would create a large moment at the base of the hoop that would only be resisted by the flat surface of the tube. Not a good idea. As it is now I have a tension only load on the hoop that translates down to a vertical portion of the square tube.

Called Professional Plastics today, as they're the supplier I was going to get my UHMW from. Turns out the Houston office, which is right down the road, doesn't stock full sheets! WTF?

I would have to pay freight shipping on a full sheet to get it to me. I may have to rethink my decking material.

Anyone have a source for reprocessed UHMW in Houston?

4'x8' - 1/8" Aluminum diamond plate from my local supplier costs $206

I'll need to do some measuring, but I think I'll need two sheets to cover everything. I really don't want to use diamond plate though.

    Any suggestions?

I want to find something that I can buy locally as I need a lot of it.

That's probably what I'll have to do on the side panels.

But there's good news. I just got off the phone with Horn Plastics (www.superslide.com). They have a warehouse in Katy and can supply me with sheets up to 13' wide. They also have them in house! So I'm covered, just need to pull the out to out dimensions and have the pieces cut. :D

AAA plastics is located in Houston and has a variety of materials that would probably be suitable to your uses

I agree. I hate diamond plate and I'm glad that I found a local source. They can do sheets up to 13' wide with fusion welding as well. I'll be able to have one continuous piece on the deck and a single piece on either side of the bed. That'll make for much easier installation and maintenance.
