I called Corporate and talked to "Autumn" who told me she was the Team Leader of their Rust Program. She told me my truck did not qualify for any relief since Toyota's rust program was only for the 2001 - 2004 frames. She was courteous but curt. Zero satisfaction. She told me to rustproof it myself or have it done.

My 2006 rust issues look very similar to Michael G's. I'll post pictures soon.

    Fricken sucks.

Makes me wonder if this whole 'rust' buy back deal is actually something they profit from in the long run - especially if people jump right back into NEW toyotas.

    What the hell?

Mine doesn't look like that, but my weld spots are rusting. The frame paint job looks sooo damn cheap/thin.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
I think they do profit from in the sense that they are selling more vehicles. Just about everyone that had theirs bought back has gotten another tacoma or something off the toyota lot.

Tacomas aren't the only victims. My blazer has 63,000 miles and looked perfect till I moved back to Ohio from the vehicle only being in Georgia since new. ONE winter and I have frame rust. I'll post pics when I get home.

[IMG]....I bought one can of the WD-40 Big Blaster and sprayed my frame before the winter salt hit it last year. Seemed to have worked for me.

What rust? I undercoated mine after this pic (about year ago) w/ rubberized spray and sealant paint in other areas. Both helped bit last winter. Other brand trucks of similar age also rusting frame, maybe not quite as bad, but just the way it is when you drive thru salt/deciers 5 mo a year.

Good idea during warm spells and esp end of winter to drop the spare and really spray all c channels and underside clean.

    Absolutely shameful.

I guess when you've been ON TOP in terms of quality for so long - there's only one place you can go - DOWN!

You should see my wife's sequoia. Its a 2007. 13,000 miles. The entire bottom is rusted. The dif, frame, shocks, etc. I know it's just surface rust but that's where it starts.

We payed almost 60 grand for the damn thing.

none except for crappy hub caps and floor mats.
My Wife inherited an 02' Prius from her father. It spent the first 6 years in rural PA. Now its out here in Cali. Anyhow, I too am kind of persnickety about maintenance and as soon as we got it I crawled underneath it and the amount of rust- particularly on some of the important frame components- was shocking. I spent a good 2-3 days under there sanding, scraping, and painting all the rusty parts.

I'll also say that the paint on the frame of my 96' taco was very thin. I've only lived in places that rarely get snow. So far I have probably painted the frame 2 times for surface rust.

I had an 88' Celica before the truck and it never showed any signs of rust. Neither did my mom's 92 camry and neither does my dad's Tundra. So there's obviously some serious rust issues with some Toyota models and I hope they get it straightened out.

I used to have something like this. The can I had sprayed on clear and then turned the rust black, neutralizing it.

hmm. Is that better than the oil spray? Vermont with all its environmental laws limit what can be used (then they go slapping road salt down go figure )

Does the oil spray help with that corrison you spoke of earlier Ben? Or I'm I sol. (ie. wait it out til Toyota comes to its senses 5-6 yrs down the road)

I think Toyota (or their frame supplier I should say) skipped out on a descent frame paint again. What I am seeing based on the pictures is called a Galvanic Reaction. It occurs when you have two dissimilar metals contact each other (frame and the weld) and there is an electrical path between them (the weld penetration) and of course a means of the ions moving (water). They only way to combat it is to seal it which elimnates ion movement and oxidation. I would recommend sanding the rust down, using a similar spray that neutralizes the rust (the more the better) then spraying over the first spray with a heavy coat of Rustoleum.

I have had good results with the rust converters and rust encapsulator from The Eastwood Company http://www.eastwood.com/rust-solutions/treatment.html. I find that it holds up better than the Rust Oleum or Krylon products. Treating and painting my frame is definatley on the to do list.

I've had a little bit of surface rust on my frame, mostly around the front body mounts and welds. I just periodically go all around under it with some flat black rust inhibitor paint to keep it looking good and protected. I have the 2 worest climates for rust- snow/ice in the winter where they spray that crap on the road, then all summer im on the so. Oregon coast literally feet from the ocean. The salt air really gets to things out here. You should see some of our 3 yr old quad frames, even with regular washing.

Garaging your truck might have been the problem the ethanol in the gas can act like a detergent that can cause rust. When you park your truck in the garage, and close the door the fumes can be trapped in the garage causing the rust. I've seen it happen to my neighbors shovels and stuff

they deff profit from the rusted frames. i was going to just trade me truck in for a new but didnt for 2 reasons
1: why should i take the hit on a trade and waste year n half of payments
    because of a toyota defect
2: why buy a new tacoma when they havent fix the problem yet.i'll be
in the same boat next year

my friend is in search for a new 4 door wrangler and all the ones he has seen on dealer lots are rusted underneath. frames, shocks, shafts. they dont make shit like they used to.

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
i swear they put acid on our roads. i love seeing the white ODOT trucks with the blue liquid spraying out the back. if the people that live here would either buy a 4x4 (yes, it's ohio...we get snow...every year) or just learn some basic driving skills maybe the state wouldn't have to use 7 billion tons of salt every year. the worst part is, i help to pay for the salt that's trying to eat my truck...lovely. i'd prefer just plows and good old sand, like they do out west.

i currently am trying an industrial rust inhibiting product- P.D.R.P. on my frame. put it on last fall, and it seems to have helped. will try to remember to post pics from the recoat this year. it's a wax/oil type sealant.
