Its time that I get a new computer. My desktop seems to go into seizure mode when I have Photoshop running - its 8 years old so its had a good life but its time to retire and move it to the great computer retirement home in the sky.

I mainly need something to run photoshop. I'm not a Apple fan and can't afford one (over 3$k last time I checked  ) so don't suggest that. I know Apple has been deemed the best for photo applications but I'm a PC person.
I want a laptop, not a desktop, as I want/need something that I can take with me to dump my memory cards from my camera while on longer trips. Tired of rationing out my memory cards!
Long battery life would be nice as I'd be without electricity on most of my trips.
    Budget is 1200 (1500 max)
Should I take advantage of all of the sales right now or wait until January when the newest stuff comes out?
I've mainly been looking at the HP Envy 17 series right now

Help me out TW'ers....give me your thoughts

While I don't have a specific model/brand suggestion... I pack an HP EliteBook 8460p with me while traveling and I'm nearly always disappointed (and frustrated) by the display when working with photos. It's nice to have a place to dump photos and clean off a card, but I've found that anything I seriously examine or start post-processing on always looks different on the desktop when I get home (also HP LCD monitors).

I haven't spent any time looking at newer laptops, but I think you'll want to pay attention to screen brightness/quality -- don't know what the variations out there are right now or how it impacts price... but definitely something I'd pay attention to if I were in the market today.

    my $0.02, keep the change.

$1200-$1500 will buy you a decent MacBook. A Mac doesn't need the specs on paper like a PC does. My MacBook air is the fastest computer I've ever used, but also the lowest speced on paper. Just me .02 :D I think you're best Bet for editing lots of photos is a Mac. Not only for photoshop but for organizing them and the seamless integration between iPhoto and most camera manufacturers.

Y'all are derps. She specifically said she doesn't want a Mac. haha

You're going to want as a minimum 8 gids of RAM and 1T of harddrive space. Much easier and cheaper with a desktop but for what it's worth I would look at an ASUS. A lot of them are designed as gaming rigs so faster processing, etc. is a part of the package. But mostly because I've had, and my nerdy computer lover friends have had good experience with their durability and longevity. My buddy took his to Afghanistan with us. He couldn't kill it so after we got back he ran it over with his car three times and smashed it a ton. It still turned on and worked haha

Anyway, look mainly at memory and ram specs. Photo processing takes less than gaming so I'd assume any computer built for that will be fine ha.

The biggest upside to not buying a Mac is price difference. At least it was when I was shopping for a Laptop for photo editing (I ended up with a Macbook Air haha).

    Check out these:

    ASUS N56VM-AB71

    Asus Zenbook

    Asus Republic of Gamers Laptop

    Asus G75VW-DS73-3D

These should have a modern, fast processor and good screen resolution as well as sufficient memory and ram.

Good call on the "gaming-book" -- probably be very good for photo applications.

The monitor clarity is my biggest concern. I do have a nice 24" monitor for my desktop and intend to hook the laptop up to it when I'm home. I know I can get a laptop that fast enough but will the display be clear enough....

1200 for a mac? where are you shopping? I want to go there. Retina display = 2k for the most basic model. Add in a few things and I'm at 2800.

I am neither a student or a govt employee

That's pretty much what I've been doing - checking on high performance/gaming PCs with lots of RAM and dedicated graphics cards

No what? No you can't help me? Go away kid...shoo! :angrygirl:

I have an ASUS that I use for video editing. I don't remember the model but it has an Intel i7 4th gen, 2gb dedicated graphics card, 8gb ram, 1tb hdd and a high res screen. Cost me around a grand a little over a year ago.

An ASUS laptop sounds like the way to go for what you're asking, it'd been an awesome laptop and hasn't had a hiccup editing videos or playing games like civ 5 or csgo which are no small task for a laptop.

I would recommend a laptop cooling pad for whatever you get though it rubs everything great but gets really really hot doing it

Although I'm not a Mac fan either, they've always been best for that kind of work.

    Here's a list of top 5:
    https://www.udemy.com/blog/best-laptop-for-photoshop/

The one issue with a Mac is the software isn't compatible so you'd either have to buy a photoshop license for Mac (which would further boost the price) or run Windows on the Mac, which kind of defeats the purpose of getting a Mac.

    Software isn't an issue.

I've been looking at the Dell XPS now, $2k though. The screen sounds amazing. Just wish I could see it in person before committing to the purchase.
