mine is just as bad, i just have undercarriage coat sprayed over top of the rust to hide it. I have a feeling there is going to be a recall in the future on the frames like they did with first gens.

Haha. It's REAAAAALLY nice though. I always forget we rolled the rest of her X5 lease into it. Probably more like 40 then.

Oh yeah. Ohio is really bad for salt. I drive my truck over piles of salt and just cringe. Probably not the best place to live when you drive one of the worst rusting brands.

Some people pay more... they are Lexus after all :D

That sucks about the rust. I just checked my '08 with less than 27k.. found a few spots of surface rust (no where near the welds). It's an AZ truck, but I've been in Oregon since the end of June. It's been a very very dry summer for Oregon, very little rain thus far. I did drive up PCH, and I've been down to the ocean a few times... but never took it on the beach or even off the tarmac down there. It's no where near as bad but concerning all the same. Guess I'm gunna have to sand and paint too... or trade for a 4x4 and do it to that....

Thanks all for the advice. I'm going to first use the eastwood rust converter, followed by the rust encapsulator then extreme chasis black paint on the frame rust. I am then going to spray a prduct called Fluid Film NAS on the entire undercarriage. Has anyone used Fluid Film?
I have heard of extremely good results with this product.

Just sprayed my entire undersite (minus the TCase, Tranny, Front diff) with expoxy paint. The entire underside is black. Looks nice and should keep the rust out. Im just going to spray it every year.

    I agree with you there.

I am thrilled with my Tacoma and my Wifes Sequoia but I wont be keeping them for more than a few years. Going to sell while there is still some metal underneath.

I always have had Ford Rangers since the early 1990s and never saw any rust on the frame.

Rear Leaf spring TSB, Bilstein 5100's all around w/ front set at 1.75", 265/75R/16 Mickey Thompson Baja STZ's, Trailer hitch w/custom wiring, AFE drop in dry filter, Rear Diff breather mod, Debadged truck, customized stock TRD wheel center caps, added factory fog lights, bed mat, door sills, tinted windows
Every new truck I have purchased needed to be touched up right off the lot. What I do is get under there and go around and hit those little spots, welds, etc not painted well during the build. At this point your dealing with surface rust, and a good coating of rust converter and or paint should help control this issue from the get go. Every so often, I get up under there and touch up again, as other spots come up or previous spots come back to the party. The trailer hitch seems to always need a little paint. Sometimes a light wire brush or sanding may be necessary to really control certain spots that are past surface rust. Now, the only battles I have had were living near the beach, and traveling to surf spots over sand, etc..
But if I were you guys up North or in areas where they put salt or whatever on the roads during the winter, I would coat the entire frame and underbody with a special, oil base coating. It seems our newer Tacomas do not do well in these areas without special care taken. ;)

salt = death. it could have 12 miles on the clock but if it's 12 miles in the salt & snow, it'll happen. por 15 that sucker.

    A few things to consider:

Buy some "Salt Away" and use it periodically, I use it on my boat.

    Look into sacrificial anodes.

Remove the rust with a wire brush/wheel and then use a good inhibitor when cleaned.

All of the above are very inexpensive maintenance options.
