2nd time this has happened now, I went to start my truck(cold start both times) the starter continued to attempt to start the truck for about 10 seconds before i got the key out of the ignition.

Is the solenoid sticking, and if so what can I do to fix it?

Used to drive an old Land Rover. This run-on starter happened regularly and I'd have to whip up the passenger seat and pry the clamp off the battery terminal to get it to stop. In the end, it turned out to be a weak battery. Given that this happens to you when it's cold, I wonder if it could be a similar problem. Not that a Landy is a Tacoma, of course!

I wouldnt take the chance of leaving things alone and wiping out the ring gear on your flywheel .
Might be time to check over all your connections , replace the starter or at very least take the solenoid apart and inspect it .

pull the starter out and put it on the bench and test it. if its just dry and needs to be cleaned and greased it might be a quick easy fix to take it apart and do just that.

if the solenoid is sticking there are rebuild kits to replace the plunger and contacts or you can just replace the solenoid itself

as long as the starter engages and disengages freely then its fine but I would still take the starter apart to clean and grease it while its out.

for rough prices, have a loot at this: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...olenoid&_nkw=tacoma+starter+solenoid&_sacat=0
