John Deere (based here in Iowa) just laid off 600 union guys because production is slow. All of them making a minimum of $21 an hour as set by the union. Profits were down 15% so Deere couldn't afford to overpay them. A similar job around here would pay $15-18 and is readily available, but now the guys laid off are bitching and don't want to settle for that.

The Northwest Airlines union ruined Northwest Airlines and my dad was laid off after 18 years because of it. He was paid very well for only having a votech degree. It was good for him while it lasted, but it's not a sure thing.

I for one believe every state should be a right-to-work state. I have never been in a union and prefer to never be in a union, so I'd hate to be employed somewhere down the road where I'd be forced to.

At that point, regardless of whether you are pro or anti-union, you have the option (other than picking a different job or employer).

Not everyone has this option. Sometimes it's hard when a person is doing well to see that there are circumstances in which people do have to work at low wages to get by. Moreover raising local wages helps better-paid people like yourself because there is a bigger market for high-value services. It ain't as simple as it looks on the surface.

But here's what people really need to look at: Why attack people who are out there working for a living and just want decent pay when there are SO MANY in our country who want something for nothing. And no I am not necessarily talking about illegals, we have many who were born here who are the same.

And it's also wrong to say unions caused the demise of Big Autos, Big Steel or Big Whatever Else in this country. Economics being what they are, no American can work for a "competitive" wage by world standards and those jobs were doomed because of free trade, not unions. In fact if you look at a heavily unionized country like Germany you will see that good unions can actually preserve jobs, not cost them.

My union, The American Federation of Government Employees, is constantly fighting with the management of the Kirtland AFB commissary to just follow the goddamn work rules. They try to force us to perform jobs that should be done at a higher pay grade. No, you're not being trained to fill that job, you're just being screwed out of the higher pay. Management tries to get us to work overtime without overtime pay. Management at my store tries to get workers to work through brakes & lunch, so they get 8.5 hours of work but only pay for 8.0 hours. Work rules are for the workers & supervisors both.
You guys that are salaried can just keep your comments to yourselves. I don't give a shit. You chose to be a slave. I was in the military for 22 years, I already did that.
Edit: I forgot to answer the OPs question. No I don't like it but I have no choice.

The government has no rules saying that you have to provide breaks for employees. Union or not, they can work you 12 hours straight if the contract doesn't specifically say the employees get breaks. Check your handbook though. If it says you get a 30 minute lunch, you get a 30 minute lunch no matter what and you have the right to tell your employer to jump off a bridge. That's your contract. I'm studying all of the rules about all this stuff right now for when I have employees working for me, and there is a lot of info employees and employers haven't a clue about.

Unions are kind of like the way little league gives out awards. Every team is a winner everyone gets a trophy we won't keep score cause we are all the same.

Tell you what's funny, at my old house I had the non-union guys from the local cable company do an install, and than went to a non-union independent contractor satellite installer when I changed over to that. Both did a crappy job that I had to fix. Then I went with AT&T and two union guys (CWA) did a great job. They had forgotten more than the first two installers ever knew. And before you say one instance doesn't prove anything, actually it does because it's others painting with the broad brush, not me. If you say unions are worthless and communistic all someone has to do is cite one counter-example to refute that.

Unions need to be allowed to exist as a threat against greedy management, but so many union leaders are just as greedy and corruptible as the corporate executives they claim to protect their members from.

My biggest problem with being a union member is that I would no longer represent my own interests, which is not acceptable to me. My next concern would be how they tend to get their members overpaid for menial jobs. It upsets the balance required for successful business to have a guy being paid $30/hour to bolt wheels to an axle. It leads to unsustainable expenses, and I genuinely believe that is largely responsible for an exodus of manufacturing jobs from North America. My last major gripe with unions would be how they serve to protect lousy employees. Lazy, incompetent employees inevitably benefit the most from union involvement because they don't earn their keep, but they have union representatives to create an unreasonable due process to have them eliminated. Good employees don't require protection to keep their jobs. If they're being treated poorly in their current environment, they ought to have enough confidence in their ability to find an employee who will pay them what they're worth. That ties in with my first gripe.

I personally never want to be part of a union, but I'm glad they're around.

I agree with this. They have done wrong and they're not always good, but some of the things a lot of people now take for granted, like being paid for overtime, would not be here if it hadn't been for unions.
