Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I would go ahead and get the 2015 if it was me, wait a year for the 2016's to be run in and the kinks worked out, then trade the 2015 in on a 2017 if you still want one. That's what I'd do anyway. First year new designs always have a few odd things that need to be worked out. For example, my Dad bought an 08 Honda Accord when they came out with the new design, after it got hailed on real bad he traded it in on a 2009 and the improvement was night and day over his 08, and the 08 was a nice car but the 2009 was even nicer. Just small cosmetic things, it was quieter on the highway, seemed to have more snap in the power-band and was smoother all around.

So your suggesting paying sales tax on a 30k+ truck twice in three years? Plus the loss on depreciation and trade in? Either buy a 15 and keep it or wait but buying both is a terrible idea financially.

Considering how well a Tacoma holds it's value, there wouldn't be much loss on a trade in of a 2015 for a 2016 or newer. I've seen used Tacomas selling for a few thousand less than brand new ones, they hold their value really damn well.

Do you have a VIN? Toyota stops approving same model year orders when they switch production for the next. I ordered my.2013 in July 2013, and I had issues getting approval from Toyota because it was so close to the 2014 production changeover.

Not sure how you got a 2015 order in on November, the 2016s should already be on the production line.

Your still paying 3k per truck in sales tax. Of course he will spend that either way on one truck. But why do it twice, that's 3k gone plus trade in loss will not be just 2k less then he bought it. Your talking about throwing away minimum 6k to switch from a 2015 to a 2017. Maybe your rich but that's a lot of money to rent a 2015 till the 2017 is out.

Not positive on this guys and maybe it is a state to state thing, but I was always under the impression that you pay sales tax on the difference between the two sale prices...
    Example:
    $32,000 for 2015 paid + $2240 in sales tax (7% tax) = $34240
Now let's assume we get $29,000 for trade in...
We'll pay $34,000 for the 2016, and subtract the $29k trade in
Our tax liability should be on $5000 or $350 in sales tax.

Rough numbers I would expect to lose $3000 in depreciation, and pay $1000 more for a 2016. Basically $4350 to turn a 2015 into a 2016.

Personally I will wait for a deal on a left over 2015 and try to get the best deal I can. If the new one is amazing, I will get one in 5 years!

I just had this conundrum myself and I decided to get the 15'.

My thinking being that the last year of a given design is always the best because they have had time to work out the bugs.

First year of a given design is frequently the opposite.

I also do not like the ongoing trend of trucks looking more car like with each revision. If the 16' shares anything with the Hilux, I'll pass.

No, I don't have a VIN yet, since when I checked about a week ago the truck was not yet in production. I doubt I'll have any issues canceling the order, since they had zero Tacoma's on the lot, plus the salesman said that in most cases the Tacoma's are sold prior to delivery. This is a large Grand Rapids, Michigan dealer! Just today, I emailed the request for cancellation, but to put my $1000 deposit on a 2016 when orders are available.

The VINs are recorded before production begins, and if your order gets approved from Toyota then you are assigned a VIN, which is a vehicle scheduled for production that closest matches your order.

I don't want to be a downer, but if you haven't even gotten a VIN from your dealer and you ordered in November, there's no way you are being told the truth to by your dealer. I bet money he has no approval from Toyota on a 2015 build for you and you'll either get nothing or a 2016. Toyota should have started 2016 MY production a few months ago, before your initial order in the first place, and you have no VIN. That means you have basically nothing but a deposit at your dealer and no vehicle it's tied to.

Thanks for your input. Really, no issue for me, since I'm in no hurry. At age 72, tough to get excited about anything!

Worst case you get a 2016. Just something to know, went through the process myself, had issues, took 3 1/2 months from deposit/order to driving off the lot for the first time. Truck was at the dealer less than 24 hours. :)

Again, thanks for that information. If it doesn't get here before Winter's over, then hope it doesn't arrive until Fall. I never drive cages in the Spring/Summer, just motorcycles!!! I love Toyota's, but even they don't come close to riding almost any motorcycle! Yes, I am addicted to motorcycles.

It wouldn't surprise me to see the new one mid yr. 15.5. Toyota's done it before.

I like my trucks tried and true so I would by the '15 and maybe my next truck in 4-5 years would be the 3rd gen Tacoma. The other choice obviously is to hold off and see if the new Taco proves itself, then buy a '17, '18, or '19. JMO.

I read online the Tacoma model will cease in 2017 and be replaced with a slightly larger midsize of a different name, with a 4 cyl diesel, V6 and Tundra V8 option.

Right, I thought of that. However, at age 72, it seems I don't have the years to wait, and want the latest technology, since it very well could be the last vehicle for me. One thing I really want is blind spot monitoring, which wouldn't have meant a thing a few years ago, but a big issue with loss of age related alertness, reaction time, etc.
