haven't decided yet - kinda depends on work and if I'm free the day of the count. there's 5 or so different counts in my area, i should be able to catch one of them.

back to ecuador...does this mean we'll have pages and pages of cool birdie photos from you soon?

Yeah you can see a bit of rufous on the feathers coming off the backs of the legs. Marc's doesn't have that. I know that's a little trivial, though...
You can also see feathers going down the tarsus on the ferruginous and not on the red-tail in Marc's second shot. That's characteristic Ferruginous because the live so far north and in colder habitats, generally speaking.

Well I hope you can get into one!

Unfortunately I'm not sure. I won't be doing any birding-specific trips or bird studies like I did last time, but I will be visiting a national park, probably, and I'm taking my 400 this time so we'll see!

I've been going out for the past few days and haven't come up with anything but this.

Levi Stadium, Home of the San Francisco 49'ers. It's about 2.5 miles from where I'm standing.

The rain has moved many of the birds elsewhere or put them on the ground.

Kevin your ability to ID hawks is amazing to me. Think I'm like most people and have a hard time identifying them in general.

Not sure about Canada but Florida has a lot of Ospreys that nest in power poles. They have a standard procedure which is rather involved for moving the nests and they almost always are successful with the Osprey using them in the new location. 100 pound nest in Florida is more common a 300 pound nest has to be huge! Or really dense wood.

Newspaper yesterday had a section called 25 years ago. In 1963 there were 55 Bald Eagles spotted at Reeds Landing. So I drove over to the river for the day. There is a good population of resident Eagles including several that fly over my house every day. But on the river only saw 2 that were not residents. In another week or 2 should start seeing more I hope. I only got ~80 yards away before they flushed.

I did see several flocks of Wild Turkeys which 25 years ago were rare or non existent in much of the country.

It is a passage red tail, easy way for me to ID them in the field. Is the large white spot on the breast

    You and me both

My big bird sighting today was a couple of sparrrows in the unmentionables department at Target.

dat's what I've been saying!!! :goingcrazy:

Yes, real birds inside the store. I think they sneak in from the cold when they're unloading freight or when the automatic doors get stuck open in the cold. They probably won't make it though :(

Ha ha! Yes, probably sneak in when the doors are up.

I've tried to get them out of my own garage and it's nearly impossible.

Yep see that in big box stores all the time. Although in the unmentionables department of Target, not so much LOL, thanks for the laugh. I agree though it would likely be hard for them to survive. Hopefully they will find the bird seed and more importantly some water!

That's a pretty neat shot! Too bad there aren't too many birds around, but at least there's rain! Have you had much flooding impact you?

Tell me more about the passage red-tail! We didn't cover that in my raptor biology class. Just the Harlan's Hawk and that red-tails have a ton of color morphs.

  Well that's one way to keep you entertained while shopping!

And I got some birdy pictures on a trip to Cajas National Park on Saturday! I'm going through the photos now. I'm soooo glad I brought the 400 down!

We haven't had much flooding other than leaves-clog-storm-drain thing. Wed/Thurs is supposed to bring a heavy winter storm tho. I would expect some flooding in the usual places. Supposed to be about 3" of rain here. Up to 6" north of SF though.

Me too. Lowes and Home Depot have a whole flock of birds that get in the big, overhead doors. Never seen them in Target before
