Did I mess up using this gear grease......

    I started another thread on brake pads but didn't want to derail it with another question so I started another thread.

    I read and read these forums and carefully looked at my truck manual. I have a 04 Tacoma 4x4, manual trans., 3RZ-FE motor. From how the manual read and the posts I read here, I could use the same gear oil on everything: front, rear, man. trans., and transfer case. So I did. I used Lucas 80-90 gear oil. It said good for all hypoid gears and exceeded the GL-5 blah blah blah.

    I didn't screw up did I? Everything seemed so simple and went so well that I almost felt like I MUST be doing something wrong. Only bad part was that it took 8 quarts to replace it all.

    getting there....
    actually....im pretty sure the rear diff is the only diff that calls for the 80w90.....the front diff and transfer case,im pretty sure,call for 75w90. not saying you screwed up......but the 80w90 may be a lil thicker than the 75w90, and shifting ease may go down a bit. not totally sure.....but i think so anyway.

    Yep, you're right. And yep, shifting ease did go down just a very little bit. Mainly when I'm shifting into 3rd, I can "feel" it sort of snicking into place a little. Before I couldn't really feel anything at all. That's what got me to wondering if I had screwed up. Do you think that will be a problem? I guess the colder it gets (we usually don't have extremely bad winters here) the more I will feel it.

    to me...probably so,but only time will tell. if it does......switch back over to 75w90 at least in the front diff and the tranny. transfer case may be a good idea too....if you have the extra cash for new stuff.

    Well, I guess I need to clarify. I'm a worry wart. If it's just a matter of the truck being a little "stiffer" with the shifting when cold, I can live with that. But if you guys think I've actually put my drive-train at risk then I will go to the trouble of changing it out again. I had read somewhere where someone had the 80-90 more readily available (same here) and that's what they went with. I should have went strictly by the manual. Could it actually damage anything or even promote wear with the 80w in there instead of 75w? Sorry to be a pain.......

    Nothing is at risk from the use of a heavier oil. It will be fine.

    Whew..... ok, thanks for the responses guys. I know it seems trivial to some of you guys, but I was so proud that I did it myself. Not proud enough to make me want to do it again this soon...heh heh, but anyway......

    Next job is flushing and refilling the cooling system and the spark plugs. Then front brake pads. Probably also need to start thinking about the drive belts but I may not do them myself. Not sure I have the necessary tools. Thanks again guys. I'm off to search the forum again....:p

    As long as its a Hypoid oil, it should be GL-5

    A Hypoid gear oil is used for the Hypoid gears in the diffs. Hypoid gears look like this:

    There is an additive in GL-5 that will eat brass synchros.

    I am trying to find the additive but GL-has approximately 50% more of it. It doesn't affect the gear mess but it is a LONG term issue. It will cut the synchro life in half.

    Son of a gun...... :(. I used the Lucas Heavy Duty "High Performance" 80w-90 gear oil. It just gives a long spill on the bottle that says meets or exceeds GL-5, etc., etc., etc. So I assume it does indeed have that additive. Crap!

    The dang manual just says
    "Oil type: Gear Oil API Gl-4 or GL-5" however, it does say
    $28 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)
    75W-90.

    Think everything else will be ok but the tranny? That way it would only be 3 quarts I have to rebuy. Thanks.

    GL-5 is NO-GO for synchronization type gear boxes. I am going to agree with you though about his oil being ok for the gear box. I have found no indication of it not being so.

    Bloated, if you had bought a conventional off the shelf like Rotella or Mobil then I would suggest you change it. I believe you will be fine with the Lucas.

    Ok....Perhaps Im lost....Not the first time. I have used GL-5 in my 2000 with no issues for 100K+ miles.

    Some people have reported issues with it in the first gens. They mainly complained of grinding. As stated before it does tend to be a long term issue. It won't happen over night. Whatever the additive is, it attacks the copper in the bronze synchros.
