Congrats on finally getting the new truck. My Entune has the same crappy sound flaws that you pointed out. It seems to only do it when receiving the HD signal for the graphics. I've found that if I turn off the HD, the radio sounds a lot better. FWIW

Not sure if anyone still following this, but I kept pursuing this and had someone from Toyota come down and troubleshoot the problem. Results said that noise was coming from the oil pump. It was replaced under warranty. So far noise is gone!!!

The noise is not a normal condition regardless of what others said in this thread and I recommend that those having the issue keep pressing Toyota to fix it.

I can post a before and after engine start up video during the weekend, if anyone needs info on how I went about to get it solved, feel free to PM me.

Now I can finally leave this problem behind and enjoy the truck.

WOW.... I feel like we have had a breakthrough! That's great news, at least maybe now we have something to look for. Thanks for posting!

UPDATE... this just came to me based on epa4WD's comment....would not my oil pump have been changed as part of my short block install? If so, and my noise was worse, would that then mean that the new oil pump was noisier than the old one?

My opinion and I'm speculating is that they had a bad batch (late 13' / early 14'), I think you had yours replaced early 14' so I wouldn't be surprised if you had a bad oil pump replaced with another bad oil pump. Reason I say this also is that after I bought mine early in the year, I went again to the dealer and started up other trucks in the lot, they all did the noise and I even filmed a couple of them (videos a few pages back). I made a couple of visits a few months later and I was seeing less and less tacos with the issue on the lot, I could probably go right now and whatever remains from 14' model would not make any noise, so my opinion is that they were aware and whatever it was they fixed it.

This is how my truck sounds now (no noise)

While I can't say for certain in this case, typically a short block on an OHC engine only includes the block, crankshaft, rods and pistons. The oil pump is mounted to the timing cover on the 1gr, and the timing cover has to be put on after the heads are installed...So, I'm pretty confident that the oil pump would not have been included in a short bock. My edumacated guess.;)

its starting to come back to me now, they replaced my oil pump on the second attempt. The third attempt was the short block. The only explanation would be bad new pumps if that is in fact the cause.

    First-time poster...
I have a new '14 Tacoma DC LB 4wd sport. Started hearing the same noise at cold start shortly after getting the truck. Have been to my local Toyota Dealer about 5 different times, always a challenge because you have to drop off the night before so they can cold start the next morning to diagnose. The first couple times they reported back no noise, next trip I showed up first thing in the morning and listened as the started it, and they all confirmed hearing the noise. Next visit they replaced idler pulley's, still same noise. Finally next visit was scheduled for Toyota rep to come in and listen before any further work. By this time I had 5,000 miles, they replaced the oil on the same visit, when I showed up next morning to listen with all the Toyota people, the noise was still there, but much harder to hear. Started several other new trucks, they all had the same low-level noise. Obviously the oil change impacted the noise (just made it low enough so they would not help any further).

Needless to say, this has been extremely frustrating. Truck still makes the noise, much less now after the oil change. Still not sure why the oil change would impact the noise. Interesting to hear new oil pumps are correcting the problem. Not sure how to get a new oil pump when my Toyota dealer considers the noise 'normal'.

Glad to hear others are getting this resolved.

You may not hear it as often when the outside temp is warmer. In my case it was much worse when it got below 50 degrees. After the short block it didn't matter, it was bad all of the time. I'm not sure where you're from, but colder is better to hear it.

My suggestion is stay on them... It took me months to get mine solved, its a pain in the ass, but they ended up repairing it, paying for my transportation and extending my warranty, plus apologizing a thousand times.

I was told the same thing initially "Its Normal", but then I would say, "Oh okay I'm guessing then that you know where its coming from right?, I mean you must know in order to state its normal right?" obviously they did not know how to answer....

I'm going to PM you in a bit Dano50r....

I definitely agree that the level of noise seems to be dependent on temperature. I bought the truck in April (it was still reasonably cold), for the past few months has been warm to hot. Cooler weather should be around the corner... I am going to keep pushing on this, too much money invested to not be right.

Just another update... more noises and other issues started developing. After a couple of weeks of fighting toyota, 14' truck was bought back full price and I was given a brand new 2015. :)

    So far enjoying my 2015...

I had a similar problem, knocking on cold start. I had my oil changed and disconnected the battery resetting the ECU. It went away. Been gone for weeks. The only thing I could think of, a bad oil filter check valve? The location of the filter, at the top of the engine, vertically, with long vertical tubing, is leaking, not holding any oil in the filter or tubing to lubricate on cold starts. Its either that or a timing reset with the ECU. Its worth a try, my knock, although not as loud as the op's is gone. It'll be interesting to see if this helps others.

I have the same noise on cold starts, have a 2014 Tacoma TRD, automatic, made in Baja Cali 09/13, have 15k on truck, notice the sound from new but this winter a lot louder, will be taking it to the dealer soon to look at this issue.

I think since it's colder now I'll be doing the same and taking it to the dealer. I've told them about it since new but they never heard it and couldn't accept my videos as evidence that it's making the noise.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
This is the first time I've heard about the 4.0 V6 having a serious problem. Glad it isn't very common.

OP sorry to have read about this issue. Scary situation and so much effort and time involved. Glad it worked out for you in the end.

Bob Massie is the closest dealer to my house, didn't get my truck there though. They would only do like $500 off sticker. If an issue ever arises, I'm hoping to go there for service. Overall, do you like them or Toyota of Greensburg?

I bought from Massie because I have friends who have had horrible service experiences at TOG. Gary at Massie has taken very good care of me & is cool about warranting things even if you lift your truck.
