Maybe this could still be achieved with some strategic masking of the light pipe?
The LEDs for the tach are only arranged in a 90 degree area, so if you masked the light pipe so that it would only be letting in light from either led at the extremes, it seems like it would work.

I was going to try green and red so that the inbetween color would be yellow (seems appropriate)

Well... I tried to do the mod. Only about 50% of my lights actually turned on. I ordered 10 more of each color. THIS SUCKS!!!

Did you install them in the correct polarity orientation? A cheap $4 Harbor Freight multimeter with diode setting can be had to check the LED's before install. I have handled many thousands of LED's and found very few are bad from manufacture. Most problems arise from install error and incorrect soldering.

    check your soldering

you might have burned some leds, but also I think some leds are in series, so one fails = more than one doesn't light up

its just an LED to replace.

just make sure when u replace them the notch is in the right area to direct the right flow of circuitry (dont know if i spelled it right or if its even a word at all to be exact)

I think you only need ten in total to do just the guages with out the needles. But I would probably buy 20 of them just to be safe as some might not work and others may get burnt from the soldering iron.

you will also want to scratch the paint off the needles so that they are clear, that way they will take on whatever color the led is
