If you have time, go back and post a summary of what ended up happening. Weeding through 30 pages of people posting that sucks, bro makes it hard to find the actual resolution to the situation.

I had noise, fought and got a new truck out of it.

Noise is from the oil pump.

I'm kinda up in the air about taking it in, they don't make the BAJA's anymore so the most I'd want is a completely new 2015 engine, I think.

Haven't been on the site in a while but finally caught up on op's ordeal. My 14 had the noise when new, then after two oil changes it quieted down considerably and now is just a constant whine instead of the initial pulsing whine (if that makes sense). A good friend of mine just picked up a 15 trd OR and his is dead silent through warmup and that pisses me off. I want to take mine into the dealer but I'm not sure how to even begin trying to get them to fix the truck. My understanding is the oil pump was the culprit and those that were late 13 early 14 are the affected units. Any tips for me?

Understood. Thanks. Mine was from TOG, they price matched a stupid low price from out of state. But Massie and Spitzer are closest to my house.

I've been buying vehicles from Massie since 2006, and I've gotten 4 from them. I deal with Randy on the sales side, and directly with Gary in service, he has been fantastic. I've never dealt with TOG, but I can say that Massie is my first choice. In fact I stopped in to see Gary yesterday, some douche bag hit my 2014 Sport in Wagners restaurant paking lot in Elizabeth last Sunday and ran! Nothing $1,960 can't fix!

I've owned a whole lot of vehicles and dealt with many dealerships in my 55 years, most of my cousins work for new car dealerships, I can say through experience, Gary is one of the best for service.

I can also say that I have been to Day Toyota in Pleasant Hills, I wouldn't buy from them if they were the only Toyota dealer around. The way their sales people treated me was absolutely unacceptable. I only stopped there to look at a certain color truck when I was trying to pick out a new one, that was the beginning of a very long bad experience with their sales team.

Tcrawford, here is the drill.... Serpentine idlers, then timing chain idler gear and sliders with an oil pump, then a short block. My advice, make friends with the service department and work through the issue calmly. The last thing that you want to do is create an enemy because you need the dealer on your side. Remember, these warranty repairs are no cost to him, Toyota is paying him to do it. The last thing you need is to piss him off.

Thanks man. This is really going to be a pain in the ass I can tell. I don't even want a new truck, just fix mine so I can feel confident with it!

hotRod53 and epa4wd, Post #586 above suggests that the oil pump problem may primarily be on late '13 and early '14 builds. Both you guys had a lot of skin in this for a long time and I'm wondering if either of you have ever receive feedback that there was this window of time for most of the affected engines?

I purchased mine Jan of this year so I'm assuming it's a late 13 build. When I was at the dealer last month we test drove 2 2015 tacomas and neither made the noise.

Went through this thread from the beginning! Never heard about this issue prior! I have 2014 with a 4/14 build date approx 1700 miles on it at this point! No issues so far ! Knock on wood!

I bought my 14 in Nov 13...I don't have the issue at all and it went through a rough first winter in Chicago

Taco09, I never got my feedback. Toyota bought my truck back and they auctioned it off, now it's someone else's problem unfortunately.

Pretty much the same, bought back and still for sale last time I checked, but in my case it was fixed with the oil pump replacement, but poor job when they replaced it, caused other issues.

My AC quit after the short block was installed and my plastic engine cover looked like a couple of kids used it to sled ride with, it was all scratched up.

Sub'd so I can reference this post later...as my '14 Taco makes some curious noises on startup....I've wanted a taco for 16 years and really hoping I don't have a lemon on my hands....I've got faith though.

Thanks you guys. Mine has 3/14 build so naturally I'm hoping I am out of the woods if there was a window of problem vehicles. I suspect there was as I took a peek at the parts manuals the other day and see the gears in the oil pump now have a new part number...

Great article Torspd. I have wondered about this for a long time and in the late '90s searched every GM dealer in the country and bought every last bottle of the old formula GM EOS that I could find before the oil police could get to it....
