Nah. That's exactly the type of rig most us can't afford to field. Those guys, well, most of them anyway, have more money tied up in their rigs than most of us on TW make in two years. I like the premise of having beaters wheeling. Shows it's in reach of people on a budget. Granted, those guys were chosen because they are characters and the producers are injecting a lot of fake drama into the mix instead of just having a pure wheeling show like we enthusiasts would rather see, and it might even be harmful to the sport fueling the environmentalist fires, but the premise was still good if not the execution.

The other thing I didn't like about the Ultimate Adventure is they really go through stuff too fast. I feel more like I'm watching an overview than an actual account.

Well, the FJ50 and the 2nd Gen 'Runner are running strong. The redneck 'Runner overheated and is running with silty glacier water for coolant ATM. [IMG]

Not sure if "most of us" is correct. We have people here who dump 15k (or more) a year into a build in a single year. I think we have a good mix here on TW, the high and low end. The great thing about TW is that it doesn't matter. If you love your truck you are welcome here. :D

Why does the Jeep have the air filter on the fender, while fording water of course it will be ingested am I missing something here? I did notice the rover not using a tree saver but still wondered why most the guys have no lockers? Where do they fill up? Why do all of them have the "lower 48"?

I will answer a few questions if you don't mind as I don't see anyone answering any above:
SuperJeep and all the rigs were required to run 37" tires. I know they say at the start that he has 47" tires on the beast but if you watch, once on the trail, he has a totally different brand tire and new wheels as well.

Most of the contestants got beater rigs just for this show. The casting calls asked for people willing to beat the crap out of their rigs for the show. The reason Jason can't seem to find a gear is he is new to a left hand shift--he got the rig just for the show too. I think Carl Jantz is the only one using his usual rig.

Jason has caught hell for the lack of a tree saver though he did use one in the first episode...I have given him some shit for it myself. (a side note: I spoke with ARB about how much their name was shown on the first show but they say they had nothing to do with the show.)

The whole thing is faked from one end to the other. They are not really even racing. They had to stay close together throughout the trip. There was not enough film crew for them to actually get any distance apart. For instance, when Jason dropped that drive shaft, everyone (all contestants) sat and waited for him to get the repair done-he says some of the other racers even helped though not on film. When he broke everyone stopped but his timer kept going while the others did not. Movie magic my friends....

I hope you were not expecting any reality from a reality TV show.

    Easy there, Idaho... [IMG]

Haha, I was thinking of the Sammi too when said most of them were high dollar rigs. :D I got about $12k in my 1st Gen but I'm not really that close to qualifying. I'm lacking 35s, a winch, a rear locker, and an SAS (to keep the 35s from eating CV axles alive...I'm already doing that with 33s here in Florida, much less someplace with actual rocks). I'm pretty sure though if I had another 18k to put in the Odd Green Taco, she'd probably be exactly were I wanted her to be in my dreams (and she would pass inspection for the Ultimate Adventure). ;)

If they aren't racing, what are they doing with the "prize money"? Just splitting it among everyone?

Sucks that it's so fake, someone could easily make this a real and entertaining thing.

Well, they are "KIND OF" racing. They give the impression that there is a series of trails which cut across Alaska. There is not. These are a bunch of mostly short trails. Many are actually in OHV Parks. They do these short trails and sometimes two or three to make it into what looks like a long run for each episode. Think about it...they took two months to film what is supposed to be a 5 day race. Pure movie magic. They have a timing scheme of sorts though. So I guess you can say it is a bunch of short races all added up. But remember they are not allowed to go faster than 35 mph (the normal trail speed allowed in AK I am told) and were not allowed to get very far apart due to film crew requirements. So it is sorta, kinda, maybe like a race. I understand someone won the money but not in the way you would think from watching the show or listening to what they claim in there promos.

This is the same crew which does AXMEN. Which kind of explains the metal cable sound effect they used on a synthetic winch line tightening up.

    Pretty standard TV style reality.

So it's more or less rally-style racing, which, BTW, is still racing, just not the "guy in front wins" style of racing. They just modified it to keep everyone close together for filming purposes.

That's why they should just scratch the idea of racing and show more of the terrain and them going through it differently with their different trucks and mods

Like I said..KIND OF racing. In rally racing I do not think they stop everyone if one has a breakage or stop everyone so they can film an obstacle, though I may be wrong. And I do not believe rally style has a 35 mph speed limit either. But that certainly is not the worse thing going on or the biggest lie they are telling for "good" TV. (cough) I don't think that would be bad at all except that is NOT what they say they are doing.
