It's not based on VIN, it's based on an individual inspection of the frame. If the frame fails inspection, the truck doesn't leave the dealer and you drive out in a rental. They literally will refuse to turn your truck over to you, it's dangerous and a liability.

The replacement honestly is no big deal. My 2001 had a new frame, leafs, brake lines, some other stuff and it was unnoticeable. My neighbor's 2006 just got replaced a few months ago and it's as good as ever. His actually got, in addition to the frame and leafs and brake lines, new wiring harness.

There's a lot of threads on this in 1st and 2nd gen...

I live in pa & getting a new frame.
    Rust at cats.
Dealer said 3 weeks to get frame, then 3 days to swap.
Truck is '07 with 50k & always garaged.
Dealer tech said only thing that would be replaced is frame & bolts that mount body to frame.

The frame recall is a little different this time than the last, it is based solely on the VIN number of the truck and where it is registered. You can register on toyota's owner website and it will tell you if your truck is eligible for the recall. There have been a few cases on here already of people that have rusted out frames that are being refused for the recall because the VIN doesn't qualify according to Toyota.

Heh, thanks. Did not realize that.

That is an odd call by Toyota. State of registration doesn't dictate where the truck has been operated, necessarily; and surely all the frames came from the same supplier so there wouldn't be a "cutoff" point where a certain VIN number and above would be unaffected.

not sure what's different. i asked the dealer "so will i have to bring my truck back in 9 years to get another frame?" and they said the new one is built differently and will last. fuck it. i probably won't have the truck at that time anyway.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
$15000 to replace a frame and all those other components? Hope Toyota learned their lesson on this one. May have to get my frame done soon too, it isn't horribly bad yet from what I can see and it has been coated, but it is peeling off and rust is showing through but it is still solid for now.

Meef, recall is based on vin and state the truck is registered in.
Also,my frame just failed,& the dealered returned my truck until frame comes in.
It is only in extreme rust cases they will not let u leave with the truck.

Yep. Sold to a guy in New York in maybe... July?. Cool dude. He and his girl took the bus down to Pittsburg, caught a ride to my house, bought the truck, and promptly took a off road camping trip with it through / to the ANF on their way home to NY.

awesome. i was looking for a first gen for my fiance when i came across it. looked super clean.

just an update. they've had my truck for 8 weeks now (quoted me 6-8 weeks). i went in yesterday and tried to get my truck back at least until the frame comes in. talked to my service rep for a while, talked to the manager. apparently they have to keep it as they are now liable if anything happens (i've already signed the paperwork agreeing the frame is bad). so... still driving the rental. miss my truck dearly. now they are saying after the 1st of the year. i'm excited to get the truck back with the new frame though - i'd like to think all of this will be worth it.

Took my truck and dropped it off last night for the undercoating recall and they called me today saying that I have a hole in my frame and it is unsafe to return to me. So they are ordering a new frame and will have a rental car for me tomorrow.

Toyota is picking up the entire bill including the rental, so what the hell.

This sucks. I don't live up north and have all kinds of problems like y'all do. But I have seen your truck a few times, been a fan. Actually your truck was the first one I saw the TJM on and I ended up getting one myself cause I liked it so much. Hope you get your truck back soon and that it's good as new.
