    Please don't sandbag this and say everyone has different tastes in what they hear or what music they listen to, im just looking for something that'll fit well with my figurative amp and head unit through numbers.

    The amp iv picked out is the Alpine PDX-V9, capable of producting 100 watts RMS x 4 + 500 watts RMS x 1, heres all the info: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500PDXV9/Alpine-PDX-V9.html

    I'm also looking at the Alpine CDE-HD149BT: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_500HD149BT/Alpine-CDE-HD149BT.html

    (Btw if someone could tell me about preamp voltage and how to pair amps with this number that would be awesome.)

    My question is what should I be looking for in speakers, numbers-wise? I may bridge my amp so I want speakers that can handle 200w RMS x 2 ohms but for now assume ill only have one.

    Mostly, and most generally, the higher the pre-amp voltage is the less you have to adjust the gain on the amp to match the voltage to the stated amount of output. In other words, the higher the better, as long as its within the range of the amps stated input voltage.

    As for speakers, I'm partial to the mercury k62's. They blow away all name brands and come in at less than 1/2 the price of those said name brands. Only 800$ + comp sets can keep up. Im currently working on a clients install with a Pure SQ setup. We have the MS90.4 bridged to the k62s. I cannot wait!

    so 4v from my head unit is better than 2v... how do I know where to set my gain? And when you say within the amps stated input voltage... do you mean the power requirements? 14.4 DC (11-16v ALLOWABLE) or the max power? 1400w. or the RMS?
    RMS Power Ratings
    • Per channel into 4 Ohms: 100W RMS x 4 + 500W RMS (4-ohm, 14.4V <1%THD+N)
    • Per channel into 2 Ohms: 100W RMS x 4 + 500W RMS (2-ohm, 14.4V <1%THD+N)
    • Bridged 4 Ohms: 200W RMS x 2 (4-ohm, 14.4V <1%THD+N)
    I have no idea where to find this number...

    for this amp, the input sensitivity is .2v-4v.
    Thus, if the said head unit produces Max output voltage of an actual 4v unclipped then your amp going would stay rather low, almost zero.

    Though, what id suggest is:
    A) if you have access to an o-scope then you can measure where voltage before clipping and adjust the gain on the amp accordingly.
    b) If you don't have access to a scope, Most reputable brands name head units on a 4v pre output id suggest setting you volume at 3/4 and adjusting your gain up just under 1/4.
    c) many amps have output voltage listed in the manuals for gain setting to match the input voltage.
    this is just a generalization for illustration purposes, though option a and b are both feasible solutions

    Well here are the speakers I have picked out for now, Audison AV-K6 125 RMS (kinda hard finding prices on these babies, but lots of good reviews and their informations on their webpage) with a JL Stealthbox, I don't even use the back seat compartment anyways.

    Im kinda thinking the steathbox will be too underpowered for my tastes... The audio guy said JL doesn't like their products overly powered, so I'm a little nervous I won't like it. Any personal experience with JL's Steathbox?

    Bump for finals week, does a crossover need its own amp source?

    That depends, do you mean one of the big old ones or a passive like the component sets?

    A passive cross over is not an amplifier so to answer your question :

    You need an amp.

    GOOD choice! You cannot go wrong with elettromedia products.

    To answer your question about crossovers;

    The crossovers with your Audison speakers are passive crossovers and get connected to the amplifier on the input side. Once you have them, it'll be pretty straight forward. They are labeled. If you are putting your tweeters in the factory tweeter location on the door, you will want to use the -2db setting on the crossovers.

    And to reinforce what was said before about input voltage;

    You want to set this with an oscilloscope for the best possible results. I prefer to choose amplifiers with a lot more power than what my speakers recommend using. If you are bridging the channels, then you are already off to a good start for those Audison speakers. Set your gain structure from the head unit forward. Use lossless test tones at 0db to find the maximum undistorted volume level of your head unit then move onto the amplifier. I personally run my amps with the gain at zero in every application possible.

    While you "can" run a passive without an amp, you won't increase power..just split the signals to the speaker they belong in.

    Yeah, it simply wouldn't make sense though to try run a passive cross over without amplifying it in the Op's situation

    I don't think it makes sense to upgrade anything on our trucks without at least getting a better head unit, no doubt..but to each their own.

    Technically it will have an "amp" source since the crossover itself makes no power...be it from the head unit or a separate amp.

    It's a breeze..there's an input positive/negative and then 2 outs, tweet and woofer.

    Hope this helps
