I am thinking about changing from my Sport 17" wheels to TRD Beadlock Style 16" wheels. I wish they made the Beadlocks in 17".

Is there any advantages/disadvantages associated with this swap other than buying new tires and TPMS sensors?

    Anyone out there done this?

    Thanks

16" tires of the same overall diameter will have more rubber on the sidewalls so they are more effective when aired down and will offer a smoother ride off road. The one inch difference may only be slightly noticeable. Also, 16" tires of the same diameter will usually run $100-200 cheaper for a set of 4.

Was thinking of doing the same exact thing with brand new Sport wheels

I'd probably get new sensors if they don't cost a lot and keep my old wheels/tires as spares or sell....who knows :)

I switch from 17" rims and 33's during the winter to 16" rims and 35's for the summer months mainly for offroading and rock crawling. The more rubber between the ground and my rims the better especially when dropping down to 12 psi. I don't bother with 2 sets of tpms sensors tho.

These are what I have now. I run my 16" TRD Beadlocks from spring til fall, my 17" Sport wheels for winter. I also have a whole other set of TPMS sensors, but never reprogrammed from one to the other, the taller tire is pretty obvious when it's slack. Wheels size doesn't really have a tremendous effect on ride quality, but 255/85/16 look evil as fuck on those 16" wheels. Like neverstuck said, 16"s are great for offroading when aired down and tend to be cheaper to buy (tire).

EDIT: If you get sensors for the 16", make sure you get the right part #, my set was $140 for a used set, but they hold air, and \I wrote down the serial numbers off them all if I ever get the plug-in for reprogramming them.

Did anyone who switched to 16" also switch the spare?

I switched my spare because it didn't match the overall size of my tires. I changed from 17" to 16".

Pretty sure I kept the 17" spare wheel and just went with a used tire that matches the overall size of my running tires.

I believe sensors are about $60 per wheel.

Is going from 17's to 16's enough of a difference to justify the cost?

I could see going from 20's to 16's!

You should be able to just swap your tpms from the toyota wheels to new wheels.

Will 245/75 R16 fit the TRD beadlock wheels? Or am I way off here?

Essentially what I'm getting at is I love that wheel too but my truck is a highway commuter... And its stock 4x4 height...

    The TRD Beadlocks are 16x7.5.

Per Tire Rack the range for a 245/75 Dunlop Grandtek AT20 is 6-8" wide, so you're well within the range of what you can run.

    Do it.

I think I've decided that is what I am going to do! Don't feel like going through the cost and hassle of buying new tpms and reprogramming:)
