    uh , Bamatoy stated about 3 times now that ABS increases stopping distances on snow and ice and that the Tacoma's ABS system is terribly implemented

    ABS does work great on high traction surfaces

    Read much ?

    In some instances steering control would be more desirable than stopping distance but I don't think that snow / ice conditions is necessarily one of them , however I think you guy's are taking what he was saying out of context a bit as I believe we have all agreed on the following ;

    1) ABS increases stopping distances on snow / ice / low traction surfaces

    2) the Tacoma ABS system is hyperactive

    and optionally ;

    3) ABS works well and is a beneficial system on dry pavement / high traction surfaces

    4) F1 drivers pull 5G's under braking

    and personally ;

    5) I thought I bailed on this thread already for this year

    100% increase in stopping distance seems pretty unlikely

    On glare ice the person who glides through a stop sign and has no choice but remove their foot from the brake to avoid a collision on the opposite side of the intersection because the vehicle won't stop (and as luck would have it a cop sitting parked watching) would understand what I'm talking about.

    I have had my ’07 fuck me over. has put me in a ditch when i was in a muddy field,(the front end fell in and was resting on the frame, I had the stock rugged fails at the time) almost put me in a barbwire fence/trees in a snow covered field. (had nitto tera grapplers this time and all the times after) has made me slide into a road trying to exit a snowy drive way.(was not even moving 5MPH when it kicked in and was pressing the brakes very easy and slowly.)

    NEVER have i been able to have it turn on on dry road way/parking lot what ever. just rain/mud and snow do i have problems with it and i all ways snow down in those conditions.

    should rephrase that. works good/great compared to how it works in other conditions.

    I have played around with it some.(not on a road way, but on concrete/asphalt under controlled environment. never could get it to go off like it has when in snow or mud/gravel ect. even testing it at 50 mph pressing the brake as hard and fast as i could.

    Just to make things clear here, just because I NOW live in Florida, does not mean I have lived here all my life. I have lived in areas with snow, heavy rain, ice, etc have been the norm, and have driven hundreds of cars with and without ABS. I know exactly how they work, and are designed to work. It is a simple fact that a wheel that is locked up on ANY road condition, allows you zero control over that wheel. While the Tacoma is really not engineered well at all, When you are driving a 3500 Chevy with a 10k-lb trailer behind you on an icy road and some idiot swerves over in front of you, you will be quite thankful that the ABS system allows you to have full control over the truck, even with some added stopping distance. If it weren't for the ABS system in that truck, there would be at least one more dead driver on the road. I was able to have my foot solid on the brake, and was still able to steer around the car, trailer and all. Scary as hell? YES. But if I did not have ABS I would have plowed right into his stupid ass. And no, I was not speeding or anything. Yeah, I know a thing or two about ABS brake modulation, and how weird it feels. I also know that while it is not the case with everyone, people who do not understand how ABS systems work, tend to try to overcome the system using old-school driving techniques, which defeat the purpose of the ABS. Steady foot braking is the best was to drive an ABS equipped vehicle. Sadly Toyota did a crap job on this truck model.

    I did this test 4/9/2013. On the left is ABS enabled, on the right is with the ABS fuse pulled. With ABS enabled I came to a stop right about where I'm taking the pic. By the lines painted in the parking lot you can see it took a lot longer to stop with ABS, but a nice straight line.

    ABS fuse pulled, I had to pump the brakes once to keep the truck from diving further downhill, but came to a stop in less distance. I was in neutral with/without ABS.

    Myself, I learned where the threshold is for ABS to kick in and tried to not stomp on the brakes to GET TO that threshold. Also, I pop any vehicle into neutral (or clutch disengaged) before trying to brake on snow.

    Does yours have VSC? Maybe that could be causing the problem. Mine doesn't have VSC and the ABS behaves normally.

    I think Either way you would have problems. (yes even with ABS) when it pulses and engages the brakes is going to cause the wheels to lock up or come close and they will just slide.

    When i have been trying to steer in snow or wet grass/ mud and ABS/trac was going off i lost all control. I could not steer where i wanted to go.

    The ABS system is different on the OR trucks, right? Is it only the folks with the OR having issues?
