    Let me be plain.

I have been driving on snow and ice for over 30 years.I've driven on it with Plymouth dusters and Chevy impala and also with several current late model cars with abs. In deep snow and glare ice.

I personally believe that TACOMA ABS ALMOST CAUSED ME TO REAR END A CAR AT 5 MPH. I now allow extra distance to compensate for tacoma abs.

[SARCASM] Oh, not to say that Toyota could ever screw anything up. Or that a computer programmer could ever screw anything up. No. Of course not. We all know their wonderful reputations for perfection. [/SARCASM]

Still ABS helps you to steer if you have room, but I would prefer ability to stop and stop in shorter distance than ability to steer thanks to ABS.
You dotn need ABS all you have to do is apply break pressure accordingly. Thats what people did before ABS and it worked.

    Sorry but you are wrong.
Mechanical LSD does not care about speed of wheels, what it cares where the torque/force is going. That is why its much much better than Electronic junk they installed.
In Human talk difference is like this.
You walk on sidewalk you see ice you change nothing, you step on the ice your leg slips you lend on your butt and say hey my right foot was not going as fast as left foot.

Mechanical LSD is different you step on the ice and when you feel your foot is slipping you reduce how much force you applying there, than reduce left foot and that changes how you walk. Thus you Do not land on your butt, but you walk funny until you get off the ice.
The only way to make Electronic system do the same thing is
    A. Install expensive torque sensors and variable torque transmission to each wheel
    b. have all electric engines one in each wheel, and have computer adjust power based on the Amp draw to each engine.

Now $500 for Truetrac sounds way better deal than bunch of expensive sensors or electric motors that will get eaten by road salt.

Then, perhaps ABS should be automatically disabled when driving in a straight line?

Okay, I agree, but it still feels like acceleration due to the change in deceleration. The point is that if the ABS had not engaged, the vehicle would have stopped before plowing into the vehicle in front of it.

    Amen!

Not in my case! The ABS Brakes didn't even pulsate, they just released.

I beg to differ! The ABS failed on my 2005, but seems to be working better on my 2014.

Amen! Most drivers try to avoid using the brakes when negotiating a turn, nullifying the only advantage of ABS.

    Certainly in the 2005-2010 models!

I know the feeling. As I understand the ABS system, it is only active at 25 MPH or less. Unfortunately, my experience ended in two totaled vehicles.

    My conclusions:
    1) ABS on 2005-2010 Tacomas are dangerous in all instances (at least on my 2005)
    2) When driving in snow, rain, ice, mud or off road, go into 4WD mode (in most cases)
    3) ABS should be disabled when driving in 4WD mode (in most cases)
    4) Install the ABS defeat mod so that you can disable ABS when in 4WD mode.

ABS is like GPS.... you cant fight it or kinda use it. Its all or nothing.

ABS-press the brake hard and hold it in... let the system do its job. Or disable it and pump your brakes like you used to.
you cant do both and expect success

GPS- take the turns it tells you, or turn it off and go your own way.
mixing and matching ends up with random turns and constant rerouting.

Just found this thread. All I will say is when I am in the snow and I need to stop, I put my truck in neutral and tap the brakes very quickly to try to avoid the abs from kicking in. Works 60% of the time. When it kicks in, I push the brake pedal to the floor and look for the less damaging escape route. The ABS system is very sensitive.

I am quite aware of how people drove before ABS. I was driving back then as well. And in my case, if it were not for the ABS system in that truck, I am positive I would have killed that other driver, or at least seriously injured him. Again, no human being on this earth is capable of "applying brake pressure accordingly" to an individual wheel. Only ABS can do that. The basis behind the system is sound. Toyota's application just sucks.

FYI, that is incorrect. The ABS system is able to activate at any speeds.

That is probably correct. All you need is for the a rear tire to lock up (the most likely scenario) when doing a panic stop.

It appears as if there may be two different types of ABS systems for pickup trucks (in all, there are 3 types): Three-channel and One-channel. Based on the descriptions and look of the master cylinders, I believe that the 2005-2010 may have been One-channel systems and my 2014 is a Three-channel system. These differences may contribute to the effectiveness of ABS.

Sense of acceleration? "The ABS controller knows that such a rapid deceleration is impossible, so it reduces the pressure to that brake until it sees an acceleration, then it increases the pressure until it sees the deceleration again."

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found "vehicles equipped with ABS were overall no less likely to be involved in fatal accidents than vehicles without. The study actually stated that although cars with ABS were less likely to be involved in accidents fatal to the occupants of other cars, they are more likely to be involved in accidents fatal to the occupants of the ABS car, especially single-vehicle accidents."

Also, contrary to what some people have said, "Some people think that since ABS allows you to steer during a panic stop, more people run off the road and crash."

Here's the link to this information: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/auto-parts/brakes/brake-types/anti-lock-brake5.htm/printable

I still hold to my conclusions.

09-15 Tacomas use a 4 channel ABS/Trac/A-LSD/VSC combination system. The TRD Off-Roads use a different system that includes ATRAC.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Correct and why I would appreciate it if the brakes would apply and the wheels stop turning.
