99 Tacoma 3.4, 5VZ-FE, freeze plugs causing multiple problems... Water leaks out from behind the starter on the passenger side, "obviously fixable" the other weird thing is, inside the filler neck of the radiator, there is some sort of "crusty" derbies built up, as well as the radiator hoses having an inner crust...
As well as me and a friend can discern, the freeze plugs are "rotting" away inside my water system? The plugs are "not" made of brass. Could there be some sort of electrolysis going on that corrodes the plugs to little bits? Other then that, I don't know how, or what the little bits of crust in my cooling system are...I called my local Toyota Dealer, and they had "never saw or heard" of this type of thing happening, So I came to the only place I know of, where to find the answer...ALL YOU GREAT PEOPLE, who I Thank Profusely! :)

    Welcome to TW!

The crusty deposits are silicates from antifreeze. I assume it was been a while since it was flushed. If you have a local radiator shop, you can take it to them and they can "dip it". This will remove the silicate build up.

The freeze plug issue is not common but it does happen. This is a sign your coolant system is "out of whack" (sound like too much water). If you have a system pressure leak (bad radiator cap, leaky water pump, leaky freeze plugs), it will allow the coolant system to boil especially if it is high on the water side of the ratio. When this happens, it can cause cavitation. Cavitation is more than likely what is damaging the plugs. It will literally drill through metal over time.

This is a great opertunity to revamp you coolant system and change the timing belt (should be changed every 90k for the 3.4). Also to replace any bad freeze plugs.

Thank You for the info on the coolant and my silica buildup...I have done some more research in the repair manual, and came up with another question...My Repair manual shows a "Drain Plug" on the passenger side near the starter location, Question is if this "drain plug" is the same as a "freeze Plug" I have been searching the forum for "freeze plug" help and I can only find a couple of posts, that are no help...I live in Northern California, where it doesn't freeze, so I don't know how the water is just pouring out on to the ground, when I fill the radiator...? any more help would be greatly appreciated!

Freeze plug and Drain plug are not interchangable. A drain plug can be easily removed and re-installed (like when you change your oil). A freeze plug is "frozen" in place. It is not meant to be removed unless your are overhauling a motor or it fails. It is a press fit.

So, you are saying it is leaking out of the block drain plug?

What color is you coolant by chance?

Thanks for the help, I am proud to be a member of Taco World... This link goes to the manual page that I was talking about, it shows a "drain plug " that is not in the oil pan,but on the engine block itself, kind of besids the point now that ... In my wrenching yesterday, I removed the starter, and found the spot where the water was pouring out, it is a "Freeze" plug "hard to remove w/no threads, knocked in" Q: Called Toyota Dealer 'bout my rusty blown out freeze plug problem, and he had never herd of a 99Tacoma needing it's freeze plugs replaced, I have always put 50/50 coolant in the system, and where I live is Near the Ocean so...My real Question is Why dosn't TOYOTA insatll FACTORY BRASS pluggs "like the aftermrket ons I orderded" not shit pot metal from China that rots out in ten years costing me at least 500 smakers at a hop to replace. WHY? also FYI Toytota Performance Guy says lots of people have been ordering "Freeze Plugs" for the '99Tacoma. Could this be a "RECALL" issue, just wandering ?

The drain plug is up higher than that. Well it's like this, it's not a recall because it doesn't effect safety. It won't be a TSB because they are only good for the life of the warranty. Freeze plugs do have a life span regardless of what they are made of.

They are actually quite easy to remove. You can punch a screwdriver or chisel through them and just pry them out. Installion is a easy as applying some sealent and using a socket that fits into the plug and pound it in. Make sure the contact surfaces are dry and press it in as far as the original one was.

I can't find anything about freeze plug locations in the FSM a little help ? should I replace all of the plugs, I ordered a replacement kit w/all of them, or just the one w/a hole? I am clear on how to replace and install the new one, but not sure if its necessary to take it to a shop, If all of them need to be replaced.

Honestly, and I just did this a month ago on my Brother In Laws jeep, I would only replace the bad one. It is a rarity that they go bad, especially all at once. That's just my opinion.
