First snow we had after I got mine, I played around with it in the snow in an empty parking lot to see how it reacted in each mode.

In the default mode, it cuts throttle enough so you really can't get the back end to break loose much.

Auto LSD on it will let you mess around but seems to still try to correct sliding. It'll still beep quickly if you get it into a slide.

Holding the button it feels like an old open diff truck to me. Doesn't seem to try to correct anything. Maybe I wasn't doing anything crazy enough for it to step in.

Didn't try in 4WD. With snow tires, I have to try way too hard to break traction regardless of whether trac is on or not.

Father(s) forgive me but I have not read the manual.

Can someone just clear up whether you can shut off ABS annnnnd Auto-LSD both, simultaneously, when descending mountain roads with wintry conditions from slush to black ice, and you want to tap-test and tap-test harder to determine the safest reasonable speed? And respond with more "feel" when you need to. Sometimes seems to me with these stock features on, while driving on snowcovered roads or streets that in situations where you need to slow down to make a turn, you're turn goes smoother, if you can pre-scratch your studded tires into a 3' to 5' skid, release the skid to bring the front back running straight, skid again if you have to, instead of letting the ABS wimp it out and cause you to over shoot the turn.

Mines a 2011 standard tran, 4 cyl, with 360lbs in the back over the rear axle. Studs all around.

A rundown of how these systems and overrides behave by model years would really be good for this thread.

    Tks, out

This is how it works on mine. I hit the button and I can slide the rear end around like crazy. But if it gets too far out the truck starts beeping and the rear end steps back in line.

I guess it's doing its job.

    Thanks.

<g> Yeah. And if the ABS wires are cut, the ignition is disabled (I'm guessing).

On the brighter side, someday the engineers will make "texting and riding" fashionable.

    Look, Ma. No hands.

I did the ywm and thinking about the green wire ABS.I have a 2012 TRD Sport dclb. So my question is do I need to do the ABS wire cut. I have only had the truck about month.

That's two reasons. But seriously, I'm glad my early 2nd gen has a real limited-slip differential and no electronic nannies. I hate that shit, but it's good for people who are not mechanically aware to have traction control, VSC, TPMS, etc. I don't want any of that shit in my daily vehicle, but lots of people need an electronic reminder from the vehicle when something is abnormal because they don't understand or detect any mechanical feedback. Those people usually, but not always, are equipped with a vagina.

Absolutely no issues getting oversteer with my 2010. First time I took it to a fire road I got all this beeping and couldnt get tire spin so I did something crazy and opened the manual and learned about the functions.

At least the default mode is not as aggressive as the Frontier's traction control. I swear those things don't let a tire spin even a fraction of a revolution before cutting all power.

The traction aids are so the truck can go further... not go in circles! Do you really want to go nowhere but in circles in a parking lot? Is that what you paid $30,000 to do?

My 2010 can go further with less effort than my otherwise identical 2005 could, all because of the TRAC system in H4 (and AUTO LSD in H2, if I didn't have H4).

Going nowhere, driving in circles... may be fun, but is that why you buy a Tacoma... really?

True, but I found it very annoying. Just pulling out of a paved road with some sand on it under light throttle it'd stop you dead for a few seconds. Something like that wouldn't be enough for the Tacoma to notice.

Not bashing the Frontier, it's really the only other mid size that can compete with the Tacoma IMO...just one of the things that frustrated me about the one I drove for a week.

Incorrect. Traction control and VSC for the spousemobile, old-fashioned part-time 4wd for mine.

establishing oversteer on snow, while in 4x4 in 2005 equipped with mechanical LSD is fun and useful at times.

The Subbie has a center differential, which our trucks do not. That helps make it so much fun. There's a few roads around my hometown like that, some plowed out a bit wider. Too bad there's oncoming traffic at times though. The snowbanks can pack very hard though, enough to do body damage, usually not enough to do frame damage though. I've had fun heading up into the hills after a fresh storm though following a plowed single track, but running the truck half in the plowed, and half in the unplowed, sending powder snow flying. Tricky keeping the speed up, and not getting sucked into the ditch though.

I wouldn't expext none the less other than a smart ass comment. Of coarse Iv read the manual. I had a fj cruiser that had traction control you couldn't turn off without doing a mod, and it sucked! But each his own! If it wasn't for people like you then how would they sell the 09+ models! But thanks for informing me what that black thing in our glovebox is.
