Not that this helps you out at all... I just want to brag a little...

My ECM was bad. Bought the truck brand new and the next day had the check engine and Trac off lights come on. Took it to the dealer, they cleared the code, and it came right back on.

They had my truck for 5 days. Figured out the ECM was faulty... replaced it and gave me an 8 year 100,000 mile comprehensive warranty. Got the paperwork in the mail 3 weeks later. Gotta love Toyota.

That said... buying the extended warranty is foolish. :)

    Hi All,

There have been questions regarding where you can buy extended service warranties (i.e. out of state). I had a conversation with Jerry at Midwest Toyota today and he gave me the following info....

Extending the free ToyotaCare maint plan past two years - (ToyotaCare Plus ) You may purchase BEFORE your two free year service expires. He can and will sell these over the phone / via internet. Please give him a call / email with your truck info (year, model, mileage and when purchased) and he can give you a price within a business Day.

Extended Toyota warranty Plans - Toyota Corporate now mandates that the warranty must be purchased on the dealer premises. This means he CAN sell to other states BUT the purchase need to be competed at his Dealership. He is working with Toyota to get approval to also sell these plans over the Telephone and Internet - but does not yet have approval. However, in some cases he has customers traveling to his business just to benefit the savings - even from other states - so you should be sure to check with him to see if it is worth a trip should you have travel plans in his area.

I have had Jerry give me quotes and information and he has been very helpful. However, I am not making any recommendations for him or any other Dealer concerning Extended warranties.

and this is why you cant buy VSA's out of state anymore and why Toyota clamped down on this.

he was the first to get smacked by corporate back in feb-2014 since everyone across all the boards posted his info.

So by looking through this thread I saw I got screwed on my extended warrant, big time. I have only had the truck two months so I should be able to return the warranty and get a decent amount of it back correct?

Also who is this Toby guy and how can I contact him to get a good deal on a plan?

NM on the Toby thing, looked back and saw the post.

Yes, there should be some info somewhere on your policy for a customer service number to call, I think they are in Moline, IL if I remember correctly. You just need to tell them you want to cancel your extended warranty and they will send you a check prorated depending on how long you've had it. With it only being a couple of months, you should get almost all of it back.

Unfortunately, he won't get it. It was other dealers that complained of the cheap internet extended warranty plans being sold by Jerry and Troy. Toyota has to keep the dealer network happy.

Well, in your case you made out well. Congrats.

IMO the ext. warranty is a game that's just plain old gambling.

You need to pick your bets carefully. Some things are obvious - such as a warranty for a low cost item that's better being replaced than fixed. Other times the person is - or has access to - a good mechanic/repair person that costs basically parts only.

The only thing I don't gamble with anymore is my Vehicle. I buy it new, keep it until it's not worth fixing/not safe, and get the best ext warranty coverage I can afford for a reasonable price.

My Current '12 has a Platinum Toyota 100K warranty that will last/protect me for many many years. And for <1K $ it includes many items covered besides the drivetrain, I feel I'm well protected for many years.

My last '01 GMC 4x4 I had for 11 years and I bought new with an extended warranty that cost around $600. My two front bearings alone more than paid for the warranty, not counting 3 ball joints/lineups and other misc. parts and "Dealer labor costs" . So I consider that besides the years of coverage, I paid myself back with just two visits to the dealer.

You always hear from the winners and rarely from the losers. I even saved so much with the GMC warranty that it already paid for my Toyota extended warranty coverage.

That said, it's still a game that you win or lose. Currently I'm winning too :D

Well I just called my local dealership and they quoted me $2500 for a 3rd party extended warranty. I asked about getting the Toyota Warranty and was told they'd called me back. This was Toyota of North Hollywood in California. I'm not sure how many dealerships are doing this but I guess it would be a good idea to ask if the warranty is through Toyota.

Yes. There are multiple companies beside Toyota. Be sure to check cost and coverage as well as user reviews.

I have a very interesting story about this but I'm waiting to get the check that Boch Toyota has cut me for 557.00. Once I get it I will give full details. Let's just say I have never bought a warranty before. But did for my 2015 Tacoma, after them telling me it was 2300.00. The finance guy said " but because your in Law Enforcement I'll give you a deal of 1500.00. I'm losing money on it, but hey your a Police Officer. After seeing this thread and seeing how I got porked. Went directly to Ernie himself. More to come. So after all is said and done I paid 943 for a 7 year/100 mile warranty. I will give the contact person and name of who was the Bullshit artist once the check is in my hand

He may not get it, but I disagree with your line of thinking.

A Monopoly on the warranties is usually illegal and against free trade between the states. Competitive shopping keeps prices in line and prevents outrageous price gouging.

If one Dealer can still make money - why not others? I'm all for minor differences on prices since the dealers are working on different cost basis, But the mark up on some of these (as per the prices listed herein) is just plain taking the customer for a second ride - to the bank !

Another wrinkle to this and still trying to figure out a strategy....at the local Toyota dealer, a service 'advisor' who is also the 'warranty manager' will not allow diagnosis of a problem if you have an extended warranty such as ECP that you bought to fix problems. ie.
-my air conditioning broke down, easy to spot, and fix leak.
-out of balance drive line, can't figure out problem without test drive, diagnosis, puts it down to 'tire out of round' and leaves it at that. (complete b.s. by the way)
-intermittent 4X4 problem, same deal, no diagnosis, no fix until it breaks.
-I get a lecture on how he has to 'pay his technicians'. The tech did have the time to saw off my gas pedal on safety recall despite being told 3 times not to do the recall. (offered to replace gas pedal - afraid they'll screw it up worse)

So, while I think the extended warranties are a good idea if the original price is right (and I would negotiate these at the time of sale so you can walk if the deal doesn't include a discounted ECP) if you run into a dick like the 'advisor' at this dealership, it can be frustrating.

Still, I have better than broken even on ECP's bought for Corolla (3 major problems) and truck (A/C problem). I keep waiting for Toyota to send me a 'survey' to complete, but might start sending out a few emails.

Okay got my check today from Ernie Boch Toyota for my 7yr/100,000 mile extended warranty. 557.00 back to me. The guy that lied out of his ass to me was named Kevin in the finance department. And Jimmie Pritts is the Finance Manager that gave me all the money back. So for my 7yr/100,000 extended warranty it cost me 943.00 If you go buy a new Tacoma or any 4 wheel drive car use this as an example of what you should be paying. Print this out, because I told the lying bastards I was putting it onto the forums.

Toby is still offering his great deals. I purchased one from him last month, 7 yr 125k 4x4 for $1250, and already received the official Toyota warranty book.
