I don't require OBD1, but several scanners out there can go back and work on that as well. I am not sure if TechStream does this, but I bet it does. I have no OBD1 cars I could check it on. My 1986 Nissan D21 that is going to be a multi-year project doesn't even have that.

Good to know. I've had my ScanGauge II for years now, been very happy with it. It has survived temps as low as -12F. Pretty good product. In fact, I am about to upgrade it to the latest firmware version.

http://www.scangauge.com/support/upgrade/ is the link for anyone with an older ScanGuage II like mine. The latest version is 4.13 for this model, so those with this product can check their version and send it in for an upgrade as per the link.

They have updated the Ultra Gauge to now read transmission temperatures. I am sending mine in for the update. I just prefer the multiple choices of the UG over the SG. The Torque app kills my phone battery, tried my 7" tablet but it was just to annoying and the unit did run warmer than I liked.

Thats pretty much what I came to conclude with the Torque app as well.

Dunno why the ABS light is blinking.

I purchased the Chinese Techstream - should be here in a few days. I won't be able to use it until after Christmas (it's a present from my kids to me :) ), but I'll get the laptop setup and prepped for it.

I also ordered a USB boroscope, and have a quart of Kreen on it's way. That is for my Camry, not my Taco, but I plan on scoping my piston heads, then doing a Kreen soak and oil treatment, then scoping again to see the difference. Hoping to improve my oil consumption on the Camry. The Taco is doing great, so I won't soak it.

Did you check out the Tundra site and thread?
You can load the program anytime, just have to wait for the cable.

Just curse me out when you struggle with getting it to work. I warned you it can be a handfull:)

You need the jumper wire Ultra Gauge sells for their unit. Some units interfere with the abs prong on the OBDII port much like the Ultra Gauge does, more prevalent on the 03-04 Tacoma models.

I have no issues with my ELM 327 unit I bought and it is cheaper to boot.

I later read a review where a guy said it only happened to him if he started the truck with the ELM327 already plugged in, and that it didn't cause the airbag light to flash if he started the truck then plugged the unit in.

Which way do you do it?

What "jumper wire" are you referring to? Is it this: http://ultra-gauge.com/ZC/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=49

    ???

Yes that is the jumper. I made one using a short OBDII 1' extension cable when I ordered my second Ultra Gauge, it was like $3 on Amazon. I later replaced it with the Ultra Gauge cable.

I haven't gone there yet, but yeah I should so I can find the link to DL the software and get it going on the laptop. I'm prepared for it to be a bear :) Without the cable, though - sounds like many issues are with the software recognizing the cable. So I'll see.

Interesting - a break out/isolator cable for the gauge. I wonder if you would have had the same issue with a ScanGauge II?

No issues with the Scan Gauge II on any of the 4 Toyotas we own, 99 4Runner, 00 4Runner, 03 4Runner and 04 Tacoma. All are 3.4l except the wife's 4Runner which is the 4.7l V8.

^^ Will do. I am hesitant to try to get it squared away without the cable in use, as experience with these types of things, and reading on this, shows that the cable needs to be "seen" by the computer and the drivers installed in order to get all tucked away nicely. Since it is a present, I really can't monkey with it yet, so I will have to patiently bide my time. 7 more days! I'll use that time to get the laptop prepped and sanitized, etc.

Just putting this out for information:

I bought the Autel 619 earlier this year to replace an old Actron. This one displays and records all live data. It works on all models of cars (you just have to download and set it up initially - you can even get the info for Lambos).

    http://www.amazon.com/Autel-AL619-OBDII-Scan-Tool/dp/B0091DJWV0

Best thing is it also reads/clears ABS and SRS (airbag) codes for all makes/models.

I've used it on GM, VW, Land Rover and Toyota Works perfect.

I got it for $130 on Amazon; looks like it's up to $145. But that price is still worth it to read/clear OBDII, ABS and SRS.

The only thing it can't do is program, but then you need a specific computer/program for each car.

    Program what?

Even the Toyota dealers can't reprogram the engine ECU. All they can do is reflash what Toyota allows them to do on the engine ECU.
