    Ok, the bed is fully welded. It's ready for paint prep tomorrow. I also clearanced the deck to fit around the rails.

    Hmm.. That's a bummer. I could see that price if you were buying paint from them as well.

    Believe me. I've been in the same boat with regards to wanting to get some kind of coating on whatever it was that I had fabricated as fast as possible.

    But you've spent so much damn time and effort on this bastard - choosing your paint system isn't the time to rush things.

    A wire wheel isn't going to do jack shit for paint adhesion. In effect, all that does - even in areas of heavy rust (I know you don't have any) is buff things. I'd suggest using a 36 grit sanding disc; which will build sufficient surface for the paint to grab. But honestly, that's going to chew up at least a day just on prep - then it'll flash overnight if you don't get a quick primer coat on.

    I'd shop around for someone else to blast and paint. Think of how much your time is worth to you. You'll never match the quality of a good blast with a grinder and wire wheel. Trust me. I've had the pleasure of repainting an entire steel deck of a boat due to rushing things and not blasting.

    The UHMW cuts really nice. A standard hole saw went right through it.

    Gloss black it is.

    Well, I do have a paint that's intended to go over imperfect surfaces so I'm not too worried about it. I am planning on calling around tomorrow to see if I can find a local to blast the thing for me.

    At this point I'm not planning on it. After it's all put together I'll see if I change my mind.

    I guess it never hurts to ask. I just called Texas Blast Company. They quoted me $250 to blast and paint the bed, and I can have it back Friday! Yup, that's gonna happen.

    I sent the guy a few pictures of the bed so that there wouldn't be any surprises when I showed up with it. He upped the price to $300, and I'm perfectly fine with that.

    Still solid - I was quoted $250 just to blast my rear bumper earlier this year by a local company, not even bringing it into their paint area - outrageous. There's only one powder coater in town I'll use anymore, did the front bumper of my Jeep for $125, blasted and coated.

    I was just going to have them blast it as I figured they wouldn't have time to paint it, but they assured me they could get it done on my deadline. For the money it's a no brainer.

    Now, while it's out at paint I can take care of the other items on the list that have to be done by Friday. My whole family is getting steel for christmas, so the powdercoat oven is gonna be busy. :D

    I'm looking forward to some of my future smaller projects, like a new front bumper, as my shop has an oven big enough to hold it. Gonna try powdercoating my allpro IFS skid for shits and giggles. Found me a nice metallic blue that looks to be close to KING blue.

    I considered it, but that would have meant drilling holes at each intersection. My welds would have been a little more precise as well.
