While we're on the topic of breaking in a weapon, I've put about 150 rounds through my Springfield XDS 9mm and I've had a problem that's been getting progressively worse. The first round chambered from the magazine always feeds fine, so no issues there. But at about every 3rd or so bullet after that (sometimes even consecutive ones), the slide fails to return all the way after ejecting the spent casing. The trigger however resets fine. I found out that the slide will get within 2mm of being fully reset, but does not go far enough to allow the striker to strike the cartridge.

I found out when I was shooting Sunday that I can push the back of the slide with my thumb and it'll reset.

Should I be calling SA about this, or is this part of a break in procedure?

I'd never accept that kind of problem. I'd send it back, then sell it when it returns to me.

Whenever I had my XDs45 I noticed that if I tried to rack the slide "gently" it would not go all the way into battery and there was about 1mm to go until it would fully close down.

If you're shooting 115gr, maybe try something with a little more recoil like 124s or 147s.

Did you buy it new? What ammo are you using? Is it oiled up where the slide makes contact with the frame? What mags are you using, factory? Is it completely 100% stock parts? Are you limp wristing it?

It's probably not "higher end" but my Para Expert had no malfunctions out of the box in the first couple hundred rounds i've put thru her, FMJ and JHP

I have read that 'gently' racking the slide causes an issue. It works fine though on the first bullet from the magazine. I am using 115 grain. I'll buy a higher grained box next.

Bought it new, using 115 grain ammo (have used blazer and winchester). I oiled it up good before hitting the range so I doubt thats the problem. Factory mags. 100% stock, nothing changed. *Might* be limp wristing.

Shoot it again and focus on locking your wrists out. Also, have someone with experience shoot it too. If it still does it under both of these conditions contact the manufacturer about returning it under warranty.

I have a feeling it might be the wrist issue. Out of curiosity since I'm a bit new to guns, why would not locking the wrists cause it to do that?

The slide needs the energy to full cycle for the next shot. If you 'limp wrist' it you're absorbing the energy the slide needs to cycle. Some gun/ammo combinations aren't as affected but if yours is running on the edge of not cycling properly then limp wristing can cause malfunctions. Might be nothing is wrong with the firearm or ammo choice at all if you have proper form.

The frame needs to stay in place for the slide to cycle through the action. Polymer frames are light so you need to use more force to keep it in place and not go back with the slide. Metal frames are heavier and have less problem staying in place while the slide cycles.

Practice on scrap metal a lot, then do our least favorite firearm or a toy gun. Prep the surfaces well (90% of a good paint job is surface prep). Apply the two light colors first and dab them on each other's base coat, then dab the darkest color(s). Dont use the darkest color(s) as one of the base coats. Apply a healthy layer of clearcoat. It's easier to paint the gun disassembled but keep the mag in and action closed so paint doesnt enter the chamber and receiver. Use wire to hang the parts up to paint.

I see it quite a bit when I hand a subcompact or pocket 9mm to a new or newer shooter. The recoil can be a bit snappy and after a round or two you can start to see malfunctions as a result somewhat commonly. Fortunately it's also about the easiest of fixes out of the list too and can usually be corrected within the next few rounds.
