Drive haha. You just go up saddle road and the Mauna Kea access road is right off there. It shouldn't be closed, don't think it's been snowing. But I wouldn't know

no, you don't need 4wd and its a little ridiculous riding most of the way down in 4 low. Ive seen a ton of rental cars up there but I've taken my tacoma and a reg 2wd truck when there was snow. Its probably all dusty since it hasn't rained up there in a good while.
If you're only going to Hale Pohaku, the road up to there is paved. For a few miles after, its gravel.

It's mainly just for coming down. But just low gear and it'll be fine.

Hale Pohaku is the information center and store at the 9k ft elevation and where the free star gazing/lectures are held at. you'll see plenty rental cars up there since its a pretty popular thing. On the hilo side of the parking lot, has some silverswords plants, pretty cool to check out too.
if you do drive to the top of the mountain, just be careful on the gravel road on the turns going up and coming down. sometimes its hard to see cars coming and if you're flying, it might be a little difficult maneuvering.

oh yeah, maybe eat, pack your own drinks before going up. if you have 4wd, maybe check out skyline or mana rd. i love watching the sunrise from the hilo side of the mntn. sunsets looking over the clouds from up on the mntn can be surreal too. enjoy man.

has hilo mud boga at the race track saturday and a car show at the civic center on sunday..if you're into that.

when you head up, make sure you stop at the visitors center for 30 mins or so. walk around and get acclimated, esp if your girl is gonna be with you

going straight to the top without getting acclimated can knock people out

last time we went up, some of the girls I went up with left kona late and were like 20 mins behind
    they didn't stop

2 of them straight passed out at the top

i used to get dizzy on long road trips, out on the boat or going up the mntn when I was a kid…my mom would give me ginger and it would help.

anyhow, yeah, they don't recommend young kids or pregnant women up there. the last few nights have been clear so you guys should be in for a good time.
