How do you think the release of the new Tacoma will affect the resale/trade value of the 2nd gen? Will there be an initial hit? Quicker depreciation?

I don't think that resale value will be effected much at all. These trucks will still be in very high demand, and not everyone is looking to purchase a brand new truck.

However, I would not be surprised if the dealerships quickly begin offering less for trade-ins. First, they will have 2nd gen owners who want to upgrade to the new version, and may take a few thousand less to get into that new truck. Also, they will try to say that since there is a new version, they can't move a 2nd gen.

I guess it depends somewhat on how the new truck looks and performs, and what kind of upgrades there are over the current truck. I'll be in my current truck for a looooing time, but had the thought.

    What do you think?

I wanted a first gen, but they held their value so well that I bought a brand new 2nd gen instead of paying $13k for a 10 year old truck with 100k+ miles.

Its also possible that the 3rd gen will be a total bust thereby increasing the demand for/value of 2nd gens

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
x2, I wouldn't worry. My 04 double cab has low miles and it is worth between 13k and 15k right now if I wanted to sell it. It's 11 years old too.

Yup!! Don't plan to ever sell mine anyway. After it's no longer road worthy it'll be a trail rig.

This.... awesome reliable overland build. Till it breaks. Then a rebuilt trail rig. Then my 1st childs first car. A solid axled 18 year old truck with an exo cage and a bobed bed.

    Bone Stock.
The more I hear about the third gen, the more I'm feeling like this is going to happen. Forget about oil stocks, 2nd gen Tacomas are the hot investment right now. Buy them while they're cheap!

Dealer trade on my '04 in Oct' 13 for a new '14 was $11,500.

More moving parts in that deal, though.

Market value will probably still depreciate along the same lines as we're used to seeing. Used car buyers will not be shopping for '15's until '17 or '18, and more likely '19 and '20 given how most folks finance their rides for 3-5 years before considering shopping again, and they tend to be highly valued* so as to argue for spending the extra money and buying new.

    *I won't say over-valued...but I'm damn sure thinkin' it.

It will take a few years.
with all the recalls and TSB's they will have out people will still want the older mod.

first year of any car or truck revision is usually toxic waste* anyhow....2017 will
    be the real 'New tacoma'

*not saying bad...but if there are kinks/cracks/pops/ticks/clicks/sqweeks/defects/TSB's it will all be 2016

I have a suspicion the new Tacoma will be a lot larger, which will turn off a lot of buyers who can spend just a little more for an actual full size truck.

This was me for sure just a couple of months ago. I for one am happy to get one of the last of the second gens instead of one of the first of the third gens!

    nope, same size methinks

spyshots of confirmed 2016's (only confirmed recently now that the teaser shots have been released) show essentially identical AC and DC size as now

anyhow, what do you think these are 2016's
and the 2016 AC in front of the gen2 looks like same size.

The rear doors look longer on the quad cab, likely giving 3-4" more legroom in the back seats.

The 2016 Tacoma is pretty much like the 2012 face lift. All Toyota is going to do is change the interior up and add a new drivetrain other than that it is the same old frame and truck. Toyota has done this for years. The 79-95 SR5 Truck basically had the same frame but different sheet metal through its life.
