Up at gmc again today, and you're right. Nice and smooth from the top, falls more and more like an unassisted tailgate the closer I drop it from the bottom. Still, I couldn't help but notice the factory lock on the tailgate, and the assist at least exists... My point isn't to say Tacoma is a terrible truck--it's outstanding in terms of reliability and I love the size. The point is, there have been no significant extras/changes since 2005. Which is why tacoma lost at motortrend 2015, and why gmc canyon won.

So you got hosed on the trade in then. Anyone who argues that tacomas depreciate too fast is out of their minds. I would argue that maybe wranglers are the only vehicles with better resale and even that is debatable

Hell, just make it a tiny bit better than the 2005-2006 Tundra and it will outclass the rest of the midsize field on resale value alone.

Have the supercharger as a package "super sport"? Or something along the lines. Give the trans temp fuel economy... Battery gauge... Bed lights...

ErocksTaco, to say "anyone" is anything is usually unwise and easily defeated. But I digress. As of tomorrow I will no longer be a Tacoma owner, and will keep my account only to talk to friends I have made in this great community/forum, and to sell/pass on Tacoma accessories. I wish anyone reading this all the best, and hope to return to Tacoma one day, when Toyota decides to give it a true update. Merry Christmas everyone.

You realise that in a year you'll realize the GMC isn't what you REALLY want, since you seem to have trouble keeping vehicles until there paid too at least even with there value, and then you'll be even more in the hole because; A) everything GM gets hosed at least 20% worse than a similar Toyota on depreciation and B) everytime you trade with negative equity you're more in the hole to start (ie your Prerunner was probably only 26-28 K at worst on paper, but you ate 5K from the last loan into the Prerunners loan) you'll create more negative equity, which will eventually cost you tens of thousands on dollars in drive off the lot costs if you keep this streak of new vehicles every year alive?

Don't be a chump. Keep your Tacoma until your paid off, sell it, and then buy whatever you want. Don't get hosed buying a new truck every year on trade in and financing. You're blaming toyota for your own financial irresponsibility.

Hey Sterdog, you actually make some good points. I was about to give up on this thread, having come to the belief there was no one able/willing to put up a good debate (most speak from opinion, emotion, ignorance, etc.--not fact). I won't argue most of what you say, mostly because I agree. It's not financially wise to keep trading in every year, especially with negative equity. But neither is it financially wise to buy new at all. Right? Think about it, just driving off the lot causes immediate depreciation. Why not buy used, and let someone else take that depreciation hit for you? It's what millionaires do (reference the book, "The Millionaire Next Door"). But let's ignore that for a moment, and look at your advice to keep it until paid off, sell it, and then buy another. How do I gain, all things being equal? Say I wait 5 years and pay the 2014 off... I will pay nearly the exact same amount as if I had rolled the negative equity into a truck with all the bells and whistles, assuming the interest rate stays the same, right? Except then, I will have to drive the 2005 Tacoma disguised as a 2014 for 5 years... See? I think that guy is a bit more of a "chump", don't you? Negative equity is what it is, regardless of which vehicle you pay it on.

I disagree on the negative equity argument for new versus used. While what you say is true about saving money buying used, you are literally comparing apples and oranges between buying new and used and trading in on new vehicles with a loan every year. When you buy new you get the maximum free warranty, you get exactly what you want, and you usually get a bunch of other little perks that all have there own intrinsic value. That intrinsic value, IMHO, can offset the costs of buying new as long as you hold off selling the vehicle until you extract your moneys worth out of it AND pay off the loan if you needed one. At most buying new every 3-7 years will cost you a few grand over buying used vehicles that have lost the first few years of depreciation, and that difference in costs disappears should your used out of warranty vehicle require major repairs.

BTW if you read books that talk about ways to save money, they talk about driving cars that should be wrecks (ie think a 1999 sunfire) because then you can afford to keep buying a similarly shitty car every year it breaks. I don't have time to waste looking for beaters that could leave me stranded on the wrong side of town. My ass virginity is worth the price of a reliable vehicle.

When you keep trading in on a new truck every year, you are adding another 3-5 k of debt to yourself. You basically end up running a circle where you not only lose 3-5 k each year, but you also end up permanently paying interest on a revolving loan. Also, most banks increase the interest of car loans when the vehicle value is exceeded by the value of it's loan. You end up paying an additional 5 k a year to have something shiny, that honestly, you could probably be just as happy without over keeping what you buy long enough to avoid carrying over additional negative equity.

To say I "got taken for a ride" assumes many things, without asking important questions first--"was it completely stock?", "where was it purchased?", etc. Good on you, re your 2015 pricing and interest--I can just about deduce your credit score from the interest alone. May I ask, how different your 2015 is from a 2005 model, besides grille and headlights?

Hmm... Let's talk Tacoma for a second. Most on this forum will agree (including me), it is rock-solid reliable, needing no major repairs for, say up to 150,000 miles--maybe longer for some, maybe shorter for others. So, if I buy 3-5 years used, that would be an 09-11--a far cry from the 99 Sunfire mentioned earlier. I can get that at roughly 1/2 price of a new one. At this point, I can pay the same amount as the guy who purchased new, only it will take me 1/2 as long to pay it off (say 2.5 years), meaning < 1/2 the interest. If I continue to make payments to myself for the next 2.5 years, then I can upgrade my Tacoma interest-free every 5 years, for what amounts to less than 1/2 the price the guy paid for the new one (think: trade-in value for the Tacoma I now own). The math works even better if I keep them longer than 5 years. With all this in mind; buying new every 5-7 years, as mentioned above, is thousands upon thousands more than buying new. Bottomline--buying new, period, is a bad idea. Buying new and trading in frequently--yes, also a bad idea; I'm not arguing the economics of it. But as for intrinsic value, which I would argue is very subjective--well, you hit the nail on the head! I started my "rant" originally out of frustration that Toyota would let GM pass them by...and frustration that my 2014 Tacoma was sooooo much like my 2009 Tacoma. I wanted to let others know what I found, arguably too late, that there is another truck that has totally surpassed Tacoma, in nearly every test out there--just read the reviews for yourself if you don't believe. But be careful, it may just frustrate you like it did me.

You must have Poindexter glasses. My glasses and sun glasses fits fine in the sunglass holder. :D
