K&N Growl!

Anyone else install a K&N Kit on their 3.4 V6? I love mine the truck appears to have a bit more top end, and when you rev it past 5,000 rpm it has the coolest growl. It is fun to sneak up behind people in parking lots and scare the pants off them. One day I was driving on an inner city expressway and the city cops had a 5 car Police Speed Crackdown set-up... fortunately I had started slowing down bc the light was changing put I did push in the clutch and floor it! The cops were looking all over the place for the growl... wondering who they could sink their fangs in to next. Never suspected the Taco!

 

Nice! yeah I had a K&N. But took the K&N filter off and put on a AFE ProDry S . and love it! It has the same sound as the K&N about, but no dealing with oil, and I know that the AFE does filter better.

 

when i put my k and n intake on about four years ago i could have sworn there was a difference. it felt like the truck responded alot better when i gunned it. but maybe it was just in my head too.

shitty. either way. it sounds cool.

 

Throttle response will be better, but that doesn't equate to HP gain. You folks should get it dynoed to be certain. I find that most butt dynos tend to be inaccurate.

I just got an AEM dryflow (no oil needed) intake, and it definately has a nice growl to it, even at lower RPM's when I gun it. And supposedly it gives about 8 HP gain at 4000 rpm.

I'm liking mine so far. I went with the AEM because they are supposed to be better than K&N from what I hear.

Yup. Love my K&N. Response is better and I could really care about a little HP. Its a truck, not a car.

 

I have a problem with any claims strictly designed to sell Amsoil products. Their oil might be slightly better than Mobil 1 or Delo 400 synthetic but who is going to pay a 100% premium for it? My truck has the original engine and isn't using any oil between changes yet... back in 1998 the average off the shelf oil couldn't begin to compare with typical Walmart Variety Synthetics of today... yet Toyota offered a warranty even with a Supercharger when the trucks were new.

 

i never saw a gain with my k&n cone, always kept it clean and never over oiled. I got tired of the ricer sounding growl and got a green filter cone and put it on, growl is gone and now you can just hear the motor and the exhaust.

 

I just have the K&N and deckplate. the truck came with the filter and ive recharged it once. ill switch to a dry filter when i run out of recharge oil.

 

I wonder why the engine noise is so much greater when it goes past 5,000 rpm.... you would think it would be somewhat linear with rpms, but when it hits 5,000 rpm it gets real loud.

 

Its the engine crying for help from all the dirt K&N lets in

 

It's funny you say that because I noticed my oil getting darker sooner with the new K&N installed. It kind of bothered me at the time, but I thought to myself if the truck makes it to 500,000 it won't owe me anything so I left it. Besides the growl is fun.

 

That growl is why I put the deckplate cover back on my airbox. It's freaking annoying when it hits 4700 rpm.

The power difference was noticeable though when I put the cover on. I no longer had the same torque at the mid RPMs when passing or accelerating on the freeway. I can live with it though.

 

I have a K&N intake on my 98 3.4L. I didnt notice much of a horsepower increase but it did help me out when im passing up long hills. Nice sound too. Does anyone know if the AFE filter is better than the K&N's?

 

Why is the AFE filter better. Is it a filter that i dont have to oil?
