Beginner Trails in SoCal

Thanks for the info guys. I was thinking about Cleghorn. I know that holy jim is pretty close to my house, but i have taken my Honda Element there so I think it wouldnt be much for the Taco.

Is silverado Canyon same as Main Divide?

Yeah silverado is main divide. It's also honda element capable

 

I went up to check out Silverado Canyon today after work and the gate was closed at the trailhead. There were two dudes on dual sport bikes sitting there trying to figure out if it was worth a potential fine if they charged it anyway. The sign said the trail was closed due to the recent fire. Apparently, they are doing some research or something to that effect. Kinda bummed, I was going to drive to the top of Santiago tomorrow morning with a buddy. Sign said it could be closed for up to a year.

 

That may be the case. Today was my second time up there (the first since I purchased my Taco) and the first time I saw it closed. I am going to hit up Lytle tomorrow instead.

Rock Lobster, how do you get up to the top of Santiago? Ortega or off of the 15? I would like to go up sometime and was under the impression that access from Silverado Canyon was the easiest (and closest for us OC guys).

I am glad I found this thread I wish this was info closer to me in Ventura county.

 

I am making my second trip to Hungry Valley tomorrow. I had a blast last weekend and expect more of the same. I plan to get there around 10:30 and wheel most of the day then return home to Camarillo. Im loaded ready to go, wasn't planning on driving that far but maybe. Do you have a c.b?
if not there names for the camps there do you have a spot you are going? And what are you riding?

 

I have not installed my CB in this truck yet. I will be in my silver TRD Sport DC 4X4 I am bringing my 3 grand kids and my brother in law. Hit my cell if you want to connect we will be near the 4x4 practice are then off on what ever trails seam the best at the time.

 

Ok ill go by the 4x4 area im in a silver as well, if you have regular walkie talkie? Chan. 4 if so. Il be there before the 1030 mark so look for me.

I was told that Holy Jim has a trail that takes you to the top and it's 4x4 must with high clearance. Has anyone done this trail or heard of it?

 

If it iz the one side trail i tried before you get half way up i stopped. There where some big rut holes and a Dried water divide that was to gnarly for me to even consider.
otherwise I've been all the way up and around that place and haven't found any other trails that will take you all the way to the top you can reach when you take the walking path.
just outta curiosity were you looking on google maps or something and saw that one road?

 

I was just talking to my friend. I guess he heard about it from some one out there when he was hiking. Only area I been was just up the main road and then the little open area that you can drive around in.

 

Guess my friend said its across from the RC Plane spot. I googled it and I'm not sure it takes you all the way up. Is this the trail you are talking about? beginner friendly?
