I am no engineer but I would assume the main reason auto manufacturers have the exhaust exit from where they currently are is to minimize the potential of carbon monoxide poisoning, after all a vehicle with its windows rolled up is a very confined space. This is particularly hazardous in older cars with leaky exhausts, there are sad incidents with children riding in the rear these vehicles and are silently suffocated while on a road trip, whilst their parents believe them to simply be napping.

There is considerably less risk for us truck drivers since the cab is still far from where most of us are dumping our exhausts, however I would think twice about dumping your exhaust if you have a cap and often have passengers such as your dogs riding in the bed.

if you keep the stock exhaust it wont really make it that much louder. you can dump it either right in front or behind the axle

blacksand that spot would work fine, you could do it yourself with a saw-zaw and save some money

Thanks. I wouldn't have thought of doing it myself. I noticed it's welded close to the spare tire. I would have to break that weld. Wonder if it would be lose without it? Have to look at it a bit more I guess. I just hate the fact that my paint dulls every winter.

wow. i just found this thread, the way my exhaust is set up now, the tip drags the pavement if i go over bumps or something with a load. so this might be the solution to my problem then.

you could just go ahead and cut it, see if it moves too much for you, if it does take it to an exhaust shop and have them weld you on a new hanger, it shouldnt cost any more than 10-15 bucks

I may just have to do that. Now to find a saw-zaw.

That what I did with my flowmaster, I dumped it right before the front axle. No problems with exhaust coming in the cab or in the bed. I've had it like this for almost a year.

hate to bump an old thread..
blacksand, lower and remove your spare tire, it will make cutting the stock piping a lot easier. i cut mine exactly where you circled on the pic. looks way cleaner w/out the exhaust tail pipe. noticed that at low rpm's the exhaust has a slightly diferent tone. nothing major, probably from the exhaust pointing towards the ground now.
    just an fyi.

If your main concern is the exhaust discoloring your paint you could always have an exhaust shop take 5-6 inches off the stock pipe and weld a down turn on. Your truck would still look stock, but the exhaust would exit downword and it wouldn't change the tone much at all.

Does cutting the exhaust where the red circle is showing in the pic a few posts up change the tone/loudness at all? I like the look of having no tail pipe, but I'm keeping the stock muffler and I dont want a change in sound at all.

I thought he had an aftermarket muffler though. I could be wrong.

He may, not sure. Stock muffler or not - i wouldn't imagine the sound would change much. Your only cutting a little bit off the pipe, and not changing the outlet size or anything..

Have you (or anyone else) noticed any issues relating to heat (or anything else) resulting from dumping the exhaust down under the bed by the spare tire? I would think heat wouldn't be an issue when driving, but what about stop-and-go city driving?

    no issues whatsoever.
the different tone i mentioned awhile back....it is nothig to run out to your garage and do right away over. just slightly louder. maybe just resonance from the exhaust facing the pavement.
    stock muffler btw

thanks for chiming in Nick

Ok, thanks. I'm hoping NOT to change exhaust tone.

Finally, did you need to modify any hangers to support the shorter pipe? It looks like the use of the last hanger will be lost when you shorten it.

Anyone have sound difference between a dumped exhaust and one that's standard? I have a magna flow and don't wanna cut it if it gets much louder..
