I feel in total control with 4LO in my 5-speed. I don't think I ever use the brakes, or the clutch pedal.

I hope 6-speeds are the same way.

oh yeah no issues with it! just wanted to point out to you that I wasnt good to mine when first started wheeling and yet my 6-speed is fine so far!

*my issue was only in the begining, not being used to 4lo as ive always had manuals but never had a car with 4lo or a 4x4 for that matter…. it was the second nature to clutch to prevent staling that used to kill me…

The clutch slave cylinder, release yoke, and release bearing were changed to a new design in 2012 model years, and warranty repairs were being done with the updated parts as per the TSB on the issue released in 2011. I can honestly say that I have yet to hear of a complaint of the bearing chirping on the new design.

The 6spd can't be shifted and driven like a Honda Civic- the close ratios, hang throttle on the 4.0L, and a fair bit of torque in a light truck means you have to shift it like a truck, but hey, it is one.

Even after having to installed the URD release bearing kit in mine, I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

No issues with mine! 178,000miles. Previous owner replaced clutch, due to the chirping, at 79,000. It's due for fluid change at 180,000! I'd like to go with the Redline MT next, though I've had 0 issues with the "cheapie" oil in it now!

Hey Buck, I've owned manuals in Toyota trucks since 1981. 5 of them. The latest being a 13 TRD sport with the 6 speed manual. It's an excellent trans. I should know, I'm a retired factory master trans tech. Different company, ( won't name names;)), but I should know. If you like manuals you will be happy with the 6speed. The throwout bearing issue was solved years ago. Other posted problems ( usually involve) operator error? As they say, you gotta really know how to drive them?? I'm sure we would all be shocked at how many ( don't know) how to drive a manual, or for that matter never owned one???;). There's plenty of them willing to post an opinion, ( on what they've read online?) Bottom line, you buy what you like. I doubt that you'll be dissatisfied. :)

The 6 speed I drove was one of the best driving standards I'd ever tried - wish the truck would have had all of the equipment I wanted. Ended up with a 5 speed auto (it's a good trans but I sure wish it'd been a 6 speed!) This one was obviously new, but it shifted like butter and was a good match for the 4.0 - IMHO better than the 5 speed auto.

LOL. I guess that's the point. :). I made my living repairing transmissions. I'm guessing 80-90% were auto's. I made a good living!!!:)

I'd suggest finding a MT and driving it before deciding to purchase. I bought a 2013 MT TRD DC OR...I ordered it and IMO, first and 6th are geared too low, reverse is geared too high and the gear to gear throw is to long. I put in a TRD quickshift which shortened the gear to gear distance, but that made reverse require more muscle to engage.

I traded after 25,000, miles for a 2014 AT TRD DC OR and am glad I did. Mileage is better and rpms are lower in 5th than the MT 6th giving better mileage.

No issues at all with my 05 6 speed at 70,000 miles. But if I do get the throwout bearing noise, I can justify immediate purchase of a URD throwout bearing upgrade kit and Stage 2 clutch. It's a win-win scenario for me.

It depends what you do with it imo.

On the street it's kinda meh I agree but if you go off-roading manuals are a lot more entertaining than an auto.

I have heard that the reverse gear in the manual is weak for those that do a lot of towing. Could be related to the comment that reverse is geared too high. Anyone have any experience with this?

I've got 71k on my MT. Been abused and still going strong. MPGs suck with it, TOB whines when not in gear.... still wouldn't get an auto. Like others have said, drive a newer MT amd see how you like it.

193k on my truck just had the clutch tob and flywheel replaced ... it is kindof a bear to shift smoothly but it is a reliable trans i really enjoy driving it too i came from a reg cab 4cyl 5sp 4x4 before this truck and with 265/70/17 tires it would struggle to do 65.. Night and day difference to the v6... I would not call the 6sp problematic just not as smooth ad the 5sp

What I was referring to was backing a trailer, say 4500 lbs. The reason I ask, is that I have purchased a travel trailer. I prefer the manual tranny, not having to worry about transmission temp, but had heard about the reverse gear. Just wondering if it is a valid issue.

The reverse gear ratio is quite high, meaning it can be difficult to back a heavy trailer uphill without slipping the clutch excessively. Unless 4lo can be used (straight line or non-paved surfaces), and you plan of backing it uphill often, the 2lo mod would be a good idea. I have never heard of a mechanical failure of reverse gear in these trucks though, so "weak" isn't the issue.

This^ my dad borrowed my truck to back his boat into the shop, around a corner and up a slope... Got called out to see smoke pouring out from under my hood :( it's a high reverse, but I don't tow hardly at all anymore.

I still absolutely love my 6 speed. I'm at 160k and my dad offered to buy me a new clutch and TOB. Should be installing it next month :spy:
