Google. Captain Bou Bosso if you want to do some good fishing in the keys. Or his TV show Silver Kings. He is my buddy from college and knows how to do it right down there.

I just saw this. Hope you are having a good time!

Where are you driving down from?

I love Fort Lauderdale Beach. My wife, boys, & I rent at the Sonesta Hotel on A1A & Sunrise Blvd about 4 to 5 weekends a year. One of the most beautiful & cleanest beaches that I've seen in Florida. Family oriented & cleaner, unlike South Beach. I live 7 miles from South Beach (Miami) & yet we drive 36 miles to Fort Lauderdale Beach.

I work near Hollywood. Never knew this. I've gotta try 'em.

TAKE MOSQUITO REPELLENT! Though the 'skeeters aren't as plentiful now as in the summer you'll still see them.

When you reach Bahia Honda (Deep Bay in Spanish) you will see an old bridge on the Atlantic side. with a chuck missing. That (and all the other old bridges) are part of the old Railroad system that Henry Flagler built from 1905 to 1912. After the Labor Day hurricane of 1935 damaged the railroad system & Henry Flaglers company (he was already deceased) couldn't afford to rebuild, they sold it to the US & this allowed US1 to extend from it's original terminus (Homestead) to Key West today.

So, that Bahia Honda bridge, you can see where the US constructed a road on top of the bridge because it was too narrow to construct the road through where the train passed.

My wife & I. She made me throw that shirt out because I wore it everywhere. HAHAHA.

Also, as you pass that area heading south, you'll see a sign showing Key Deer. They are the smallest deer in the US. You should be able to see 1 or 2 of them since their area is so small compared to other areas up north. They are protected since they are rare. They are almost identical to average sized deer. Since thousands of years ago the water level was low, all the Keys Islands were connected & the regular sized deers migrated south. As the waters slowly rose, some deer were left behind & due to nature conforming to it's surroundings the deer became smaller & smaller.

Just so you know, The entire Keys Island chain which starts in Elliott Key (Miami) & ends in Key West is an actual artificial reef, just above water now.

Check out this Youtube vid showing the railroad a few months before it was destroyed by the Hurricane. There were already some roads being built but you would have to Ferry your car to the islands or drive the tracks
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M40Q3plseRE

Once you get to Key West check out "The Inn". They have the largest pool on the island. It's where we always stay, especially since we do not like the beaches there, at all. You'll see. Unless you're into snorkeling they aren't appealing & sometimes you smell the rotting mangroves. Just my opinion but Fort Lauderdale beach is MUCH better.

Duval St is the only street in the US that connects 2 oceans (Gulf & Atlantic). Speaking of Duval St, on the Gulf end there is a glass bottom boat tour. It takes you out over a mile. The captain then stops & tells you to look down. You'll be amazed at how shallow the water still is & you'll see the reef. We threw Doritos into the water & the fish came up like Piranhas. Pretty cool. On the way in the boat slows down so you can see the sunset & they serve champagne.

Are you going with kids? Duval st has some characters, let me tell you. The first time we went my boys were small. We saw a guy standing on a corner completely naked except for a balloon attached to his butt! I don't know if it was tied up or if he farted to inflate it but that was pretty disturbing. My boys were cracking up.

In one day you can pretty much do everything there. there's a good Pizza joint but I forgot the name.

Oh, I almost forgot, next to the Key West Museum there is a man in a small booth selling Conch Fritters. DAYUM! I have yet to taste better conch fritters than those, not even when I went to the Bahamas & that's a Bahamian dish! He's always there when we've gone so you're bound to see him there.

They also have a butterfly sanctuary where you go in & the butterflys get on you & they are everywhere. My wife liked it.

Don't forget to check out the smallest bar in the U.S.

BTW, the lady in this pic just decided to jump in. I said "OK you 2, don't move"

Key west was the richest city in the U.S. (per capita) during most of the 1800's due to Cigar manufacturing, Salvaging, & Fishing. Check out the museum that I previously mentioned.

Also, you can thank South Florida for all of the fresh water that you see in the Keys. ALL fresh water is piped to the Keys from South Florida.

The pipe leaves South Florida at 36"' in diameter & finishes up at 18"'s. That's the pipe that you see along the bridges.

    Enjoy your time down here.
