I have 33k on mine with no problems. Love it. I've had multiple auto trans problems in the past and would never buy another slushbox. Not to mention all of the annoying "gear hunting" autos do these days to save a few MPGs.

I think the "problems with the 6-speed" are blown out of proportion by this site. I do a lot of reading on here and I can't remember hearing of a problem that's arisen besides some people getting a throwout bearing chirp. Hardly the first vehicle that's ever had that issue. If it ever happens to me I'll probably drop $200 for the URD throwout bearing kit and install it with a friend.

 

Yes, white lithium works, I found for 6 months to a year before the squeak recurred. A dab of tacky semi-synthetic moly grease (Shell SRS2000) where the M/C pushrod meets the pedal = over 3 years of complete silence from the clutch pedal. Took about 15 seconds with a grease needle.

 

So wait the newer trucks with "clutch squeek" aren't related to the TOB??

 

'13 dcsb with 30-something thousand miles on my current 6 speed and no problems so far. Pull a trailer quite a bit. Out of my last 5 trucks 4 have been manual toyotas, don't notice a big difference between this and my old 5 speeds. Get what you want, you'll be happy with it.

Are you referring to the clutch pedal creak or the throwout bearing chirp? Two separate issues.

 

never once worried about trans temps in the auto. 80mph towing the boat n truck full o gear up the grapevine 3rd gear just givin her and trans temps never got out of control.

Either way OP, buy what you want. I know i wasnt going to spend 34k on a truck to have a base model manual trans experience. But its really all opinion.

 

I love my 6-speed. No issues at 12K miles. Have towed 5k pounds long distance without issue. Reverse gear is way too tall. But that is my only complaint. I had a chance to rent an auto recently for work travel. While it seemed nice at first and more peppy, I found I missed the manual after a short time.

 

I have always loved a manual trans . Right now I have a 13 with a 6 speed manual and love it . Although after attending a class this past fall at UORTC in NC
I learned that off-roading with an Auto is much better , less difficult , safer , and all around the way to go .... If I could do it again I would go Auto , Hands Down.
LFB ( left foot brake ) is soooo much easier with the auto . With manual you will be hard on the clutch and the starter while utilizing the No Clutch Start button, only way to avoid that is Auto.
I eliminated part of the problem by re-gearing to 4:56
This cost money not to mention the loss in mpg's
Auto could haved saved me $$ in the long run.
Live and Learn .... I prefer to learn everything the Hard Way : )
If you don't do much (hardly any) off-road then go manual.....

 

My 2nd chime in - I love my Tacoma (5 speed auto) - if I could change one thing - JUST ONE - it would be a 6 speed manual.

FYI - I had a '95 Ford Ranger with the relatively weak Mazda M5OD that I punished for 120K with nary a problem. I changed the fluid at about 5K to synthetic. YMMV, but if you prefer 3 pedals, go with 3 pedals and call it good instead of regretting it later ...

 

I love the 6 sp.tow a 3000 lb boat and trailer,4500 lb tt.have had the cutout fail on the boat surge brakes and still pushed it in reverse across the alley and up into the yard.stuck the travel trailer on the beach on backed it out and back up the dirty road to the highway.you might have to work it a bit but it can take it.
the way I abuse it u know i'm going to deserve anything I might have to fix some day.

OP asked if the MT's are any better, i pointed out the relationship of threads created with problems of the MT (which accounts for the minority of tacoma sales but greater problems reported), compared to the AT (more in sales, less problems reported).

But like i stated get what you want, its your truck, your money spend it the way you wish.

I've driven the manual 6 speed , fairly neutral about on road performance def. not impressed offroad in HI or LO range kinda weird gearing with crappy ratio split, I dunno, they may have straightened out some issues but theres better manuals out there

^^OP, landphil is pretty much on the money here but there is much more. I have been following the 6 speed and its woes for years. Tonka/Aisin has been quietly upgrading this transmission all along in some major ways.

There has been a flurry of part number revisions in the parts catalogs for many things ranging from synchros to shift forks to input and output shafts, etc. in about 2007 IIRC; and then again in about 2011, the later being the most major. More recently a number of minor stuff has been revised. So a lot of serious parts. The transmission itself even has at least one new part number and possibly two iterations.

I was convinced that it is now substantially different from the earlier units that I got it with my '14. We shall see.

 

Seems like you keep bring up your preference for auto over manual on just about every post... this thread was made in search of whether some known issues with the 6-speeds are still present or dealt with by toyota...
And in your comment about auto being better or easier while wheeling! that's just a matter of option and I think, most of us with manual trucks enjoy the challenge.

Not sure if you notice that most of the relevant post have been from people with manuals with info such as: how long they had it for, how many miles, and whether they have or haven't had issues if they had issues, what issues they've had.

And on the guy riding in the bed: I had just done that hill climb just fine and with no spotter and on the second pass I took a bad bad line and fell in a rutt and while I had good traction every time I moved the truck just went sky high on my driver side (scary as hell)
The guy in the bed thought it was just gonna be a regular run and he was in the bed before I got in the situation. He didn't stay in the bed for long after the pic was taken...
It was a really fun day full of bad decisions. .. lol
