I have a roaring sound coming from what seems to be under the hood of my 2005 Tacoma PreRunner 4 cyl manual trans. I have 164,000 miles on it.

About a month ago I had the dealership repair my water bypass/intake hose as it was leaking. In order to do that job the throttle body and intake manifold has to come off. Ever since they did that this roaring sound has shown up, at first I just downplayed it as its just a coincidence. It starts in 5th gear at 65 mph and continues up through 70 and at 75 it pretty much stops. I can take the truck out of gear and maintain the rpms as the speed drops and no sound. I can feel it in my feet through the floorboard.

Took it to dealership over weekend because we are going on long trip. The brought me to lift and the mechanic spun my driver side front tire and he said "you hear that" and I said yea, it sounded pretty bad and he said your bearing is about to go...and that is what is making that noise. I just find it hard to believe that is what is making that roaring noise coming from engine area. I just had the Output Shaft Bearing replaced about three months ago too.

I am at a loss! It is bugging the crap out of me and I want to see this truck get to 200,000 + miles and I am not sure what I might be dealing with here.

Wheel bearing sounds right.. Honestly I'm surprised you got that far on one. Usually they don't last that long. Get with bamatoy he makes great bolt assemblies.

A bad wheel bearing will indeed cause a roaring like you describe, not sure why you find it hard to believe the diagnosis you were given when shown the issue?

If you have some mechanical ability and time, you could order a pre-assembled hub unit from BamaToy (member here) and install it yourself to save a few bucks.

Edit, typing at the same time^^^

I dunno why...just seems such a small moving part to make that kinda noise. But, that's just me. Yeah I have already been in touch with BamaToy and that is what I will do...easy peasy. Just thought it might have been something more serious than the bearing...I guess I was trying to equate sound to something really bad.

Never had trans or diff flushed would that contribute to noise? Just curious.

The differential will roar if going out, but you're a prerunner. No diff in the front.

bad fan clutch. I had one go out at 75k on a 2002 2.4L. As the clutch is locked up (very stiff) at high speeds it pushes alot of air.
If you take it out of gear @ speed, the engine will return to basically idle; proves that you don't have a wheel bearing.
Test: at cold start it up, colder the better, watch fan tips and shut off after 60 seconds. If fan stops fast (ie stops turning fast); bad clutch. It should free-wheel a few revolutions at cold. When it's hot at idle, it should stop fast on this test as it needs to pull air to cool. When hot at speed, it should free wheel as there's enough ram-air to do the cooling.

    Very easy.

    From the service manual:

    (a) Disconnect the hose from the radiator reserve tank.
    (b) Remove the 2 cooler hoses from the clamp (with automatic transmission).
    (c) Remove the 4 nuts from the fan pulley.
    (d) Remove the fan and generator V belt (see page EM-5).
    (e) Remove the 2 bolts from the fan shroud.
    (f) Remove the fan pulley and fan shroud.

Well, a front wheel bearing is supporting about 1/3 the weight of the vehicle, so any pitting and roughness in the bearing will cause a noise and vibration that will travel through all parts of the vehicle, though more noticeable at certain speeds when the frequency of the vibration resonates through the vehicle. Kind of like a built-in rumble strip. :)

Good luck with the repair, if it sounded bad when the wheel was spun, I'm pretty confident you'll notice an improvement with a new bearing.

As for the diff and tranny, fluid changes would certainly be a good idea if due (or overdue) by the maintenance schedule.
