It is debatable, Honestly I personally can't tell a huge difference, but I think it is mainly due to the fact that I have mud tires. I really don't hear the rack over them and the people that often mention wind noise have stock trucks. The newer wind deflector is only about 1.5" wider than the old ones. With that the argument could be made that being closer to the truck more wind goes up and over the rack but it also could be said that the gap between the truck and the windshield is smaller and more restrictive to the air that flows through, making more noise.

I can hear the rack but it is tons quieter then the Yakima roof rack system I use to have to use. It's normally in crossword that I notice it at highway speed, 70+ MPH. I am considering adding some sound deadening material between the headliner and the roof to see if that helps but it's not bad

Yep crosswinds are definitely when I can hear mine over the tires. A few select times in random wind situations I can hear it. I will be putting some A/T tires on in the next while and can give a better comparison then.

I got it! My 100 dollar discount comment was about the powdercoating savings since it costs 100 less to powdercoat if you're getting the HD bars and they are 102 to upgrade. So the way I see it, save 100 on PC and spend it on the upgraded crossbars.

Zach, what is the profile name of the HD bars. I'm looking to see what hardware is compatable with them.

1020. Any of the 10 series tnuts will fit them and usually the 10 series tnuts come with a 1/4"-20 thread unless you specify the 6mm. I have also heard that 1/4" carriage bolts with slide in there but haven't confirmed this for myself.

Awesome, thanks. My brother picked up the Plano case for me, so I'll be able to get my recovery gear out of it's hiding spot in the toolbox and up on the rack Wednesday.

Well its a land Cruiser with a diesel so I've got that going for me.
I ordered the drop-in ones with the small ball bearing to keep them in place from Tnuts.com they work great and can be installed and removed very quickly.

I ordered 30 for $15 so I could have more than enough for activities down the road.

I had seen the drop in style but was always hesitant as to the strength. Good to hear they work well. Definitely a lot more convenient.

No they are beefy. Much thicker than the ones included and just as long/wide just shaped to drop in at an angle to be installed. I will warn you that install is much easier than removal.

Word of caution...just putting some Silicon RTV adhesive on the threads of the bolts won't keep water out of the cab... Mother Nature decided today was the day I was going to seal everything up proper and reinstall the OEM strips.

I filled each spacer with silicone this time as well as around each spacer to keep water from seeping under. I bet if I had just punched the holes in the little strip I would have stayed dry. Ohhh well.

Interesting. I had mine on with no sealant at all for a good six months with no leaking. I finally added sealant as you described now. I must have lucked out before. We had quite a bit of rain this summer too.

Yeah I globbed some Black RTV on during the install and today water came out of my Oh shit handle as I was slowing down at a light.

I was planning to pull it to add the new bars and smooth out the front a little on the next sunny weekend we had so I could do some painting but today was the day! Hahahaha either way it's done and looks great with a strip installed vice the open channel.

Yeah we used Teflon tap on the cab. I'll be pulling the bolts in a few days to get the rack painted but I'm going on 4 months and no leaks. Sealant might sweeten the deal at reinstall.

OP, any plans for designing an adaptation to work over a Bestop/Softtop?
I love this design but want something that's more streamlined than a tube rack and follows the lines of the top. I can picture it even draw it up, but no way to see how to make it all work. Very cool and versatile product, been following for awhile just curious if you've had any future plans along these lines?

My brother and sister in law picked up the 42" Plano case for my birthday. I'm sure I'll ditch the foam in the near future, but for now it looks nice. It's also nice to have a new set of straps.

I'll get the box mounted to the rack tomorrow.

You sir are a patient man...I got mine today as well and pulled the foam out right away and tossed straps and winch controller in there and shut it for a later date.
