    If you have not figured this out yet. Drill a small hole using a 1/4" bit that is 12" to 18" in long by the base of the drywall and under where the switch will be placed. The hole will be covered up by the wall molding when finished. Locate the bit downstairs and drill a 1" hole 2" towards the center of the wall from the long bit. If there are fire stops in the wall use a bit extender to allow the bit to drill through the fire stops. Then just fish the wall to bring the wire up to the switch box.

    A tip for fishing. A long piece of solder with a string tied to it will allow you to feel and find the hole in the fire stop. Once you are through the fire stop it is easy to use a bent coat hanger to pull the string into the basement. I also like to use a pull chain tied to a string to fish walls. The chain is heavy and gravity will allow it to flow right off of objects in the wall such as plumbing pipes.
