Greasing Entire Drive Shaft U-Joints (5 Zerks Total)

Did mine last weekend when I changed my oil.

I put in in "N" and applyed the parking break...that way you can rotate all shafts for easy access...(somebody asked this question here before)

 

So I just bought some Mobil 1 Grease, but then I went under the car and I don't see a single zerk lol
I have a 14 prerunner Trd sport.
So where should I use that Grease?

Prerunner, that's why. Your u-joints are sealed. The 4WD trucks have the zerks.

 

I have a 4WD Tacoma and I don't have any zerks. I bought it used from a dealership this way. Could it be that the previous owner damaged the original driveshaft and either he or the dealership replaced it with a non-greasable shaft?

 

It's possible they put in the Pre-runner u-joints.

 

I just got off the phone with a Dive Line Service Shop and the manager informed me that the driveshafts without the zerk fittings are superior to the ones with them.

Without zerk > With zerk.. Maybe if you never go offroad.

I have seen arguements that the ones without grease passages are stronger, but really I could imagine the shaft will die before the joint in that respect. I'd rather be able to add grease to push out water that got in them.

 

Maybe that's true. . However it could be that the dealer improperly repaired the truck with non spec parts.

I crawled under my truck last night and serviced the zerks with 52,160 on the clock. It seems to me that the front drive shaft zerks are always full of good grease. I do use 4WD, so the parts get used, but not nearly as much use as the rear shaft.

 

I'm gonna have to get down and look...when it's not -15 outside.

I inquire about it whenever I'm at the dealer and they keep telling me they are sealed and no need. I have a 4x4 double cab. I want to make sure the dealer does what's on the schedule for the 20K service.

I have read no less than 15 threads in five different forums the past two days trying to fully understand how to lube the propeller shaft...I'm close...

I have a 2014 DCSB 4x4 Sport.
Plan to lube the shaft in the next week.

Havn't crawled under the truck yet but am assuming there is a "Slide Yoke" and " Double Cardan" joint...

Some post list to use:
- NLGI No.2 Lithium Base Chassis Grease is used for the universaljoint
- NLGI No. 2 Molybdenum Disulfide Lithium Base Chassis Grease is used forthe Slide Yoke and the Double Cardan Joint.

I understand from this thread and others we don't want moly in our u-joints...at least not high concetrations for long periods of time. Too hard for the bearing surfaces. Moly is for high pressure sliding apps (like the splines).

Question: are most folks just using a good quality non-moly lithium based chassis greast (Mobile 1, Valvolene, Lucus RednTacky) for everything?

Or, are you running two grease guns? I have two so getting two greases is not an issue.

Also, old thread...does anyone have a current book for 2014 +/- listing the service method/lubes for the propeller shaft?

Update on my 2014 DCSB 4x Sport.

Crawled under the pickup yesterday.

• Front drive shaft
  • front zerk, easy to get to. Plugged in the gun, took about 6 pumps. Seemed a little dry at 5800 miles...
  • Rear zerk - removed the heat sheild (two 12mm bolts) and greased the zerk. Same amount of pumps.
  • Used Valvoline Multi Purpose Grease/GM (great spec sheet). Red in color

• Rear drive shaft
  • Front zerk - took about 6 pumps but it appeard to have a darker (black) grease come out of the boot...Didn't remove much so can't really say if it was dirty or really black (Moly based)...
  • Mid zerk - same as front
  • Rear zerk - same as front
• Note
  • did not find a double cardan fitting
  • did not find a yoke zerk
  • did see the sealed boot near the rear. Have read some folks take off the clamps and service this... will look into that later.

Bottom line after all of my reserarch?
Get some grease (Valvoline, M1, Lucus Red n Tacky) and grease your zerks. Mine at 5800 miles seemed low.

Thankful I saw this thread, my zerks were completely dry on my 2014 Tacoma with 9,000 miles.

 

I asked the dealer to grease the shaft on my first oil change. But I'm certainly going to check it myself as soon as I can. And grease it myself from hereon in.

 

Use the lithium NLGI No. 2. for all the u-joints, you only need one gun. Don't bother with NLGI No. 1 grease for the front drive shaft, it's unnecessary, even my local Toyota dealership uses NLGI No.2 for everything.

I greased my zerks with lubriplate white lithium today. The last 2 zerks did not work. The 2nd to last wouldn't take any grease at all. And the last one just spit it back out of the zerk. What should I do?

 

Did you clean them with solvent before pumping? I'll use a rag with acetone and clean them up. You can also use an object like a screwdriver to depress the metal ball in the zerk, for the ones that are stuck.

 

Na, just hooked it up and pumped. All the others did fine. I'll try to clean and use the screwdriver on the second to last. But the one that takes grease and spits it out the zerk worries me a little. Are the zerks replaceable?
