Last night I had a customer bring me some parts to weld that he tacked together with a flux core. I didn't know mig and flux core aren't very compatible. As soon as I got near the tacks my puddle would go nuts and start spattering all over and wouldn't lay nice at all. I ended up grinding all his tacks completely out. Learned something there.

Contemplating trying to heat form some UHMW for the top bar, in order to avoid rusting from the inevitable scratches.

Check out this weld I saw on a local camaro for sale. The whole cage looks like this.

Hey gang, I'm new here and new at welding.. Had a friend show me the ropes and help me build a big kinetic sculpture for an arts festival last summer..

I was lucky to get a commissioned project as well for a city and sponsored by Sprite, so this bad boy is sitting in a local park until it rusts away
    [IMG]

After that, I decided to take a metal sculpting and welding course at the community college.. It was fun to play with the forge and all the tools they have at our disposal. Looking forward to working on more projects, and doing bigger installations in the future, hopefully!

    Wow!

All I can say is every great welder was once a shitty welder. Hopefully their skills have improved.

Very nice! I don't have the patience for creating art, unless you consider dirty silhouette cut outs.

    Welcome as well.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
I worked on a dune buggy that a Craigslist welder welded that looked that bad. Dude didnt even notch the tubes just filled the gaps with nasty ass welds.

    I dunno..

I've gotten burned too many times when I try to go the "budget" route. You really do get what you pay for.

I'd personally stick with the big 3 plasma manufacturers; it's not the time to cheap out... Hypertherm, Thermal Dynamics, Esab

I've been eyeing the cut 50s on eBay. Only $300 or so. In the same boat don't need to spend a grand on a plasma. I've heard bad and good on them, most of the bad seems to come from people who never owned one. I just want one so I don't have to borrow or go into work for one.

Buy it from Amazon and you get some time to return it if it doesn't put out.

I've been using a Cut50 I got off eBay for less than 300 bucks for about 3 years now. It does what I need just fine. Just plan ahead and always make sure you have enough consumables on hand since you need to order those from China too. But they are cheap as hell and don't take that long to get here.

The other thing you could do is scour CL for a used one. Maybe call around some of the local welding supply places and see if they have one too.
