So, lesson being- get a tow strap without actual hooks, correct?

    Yes.
don't confuse Tow strap with Recovery strap though.

The straps with hooks are advertised as Tow straps and are fine for pulling the Honda to the shop but not for actually yanking out of a stuck situation.

I found this pic online, the three straps on the left are for lifting and towing.
The two on the right are for kinetic pulling.
The green ended strap and the red strap are way too thick for kinetic pulling and will most likely cause damage to the vehicle.

Can you link me to what you would recommend? Just to help pull someone out of the snow or similar? I just want to make sure I get the right one.

The Smittybuilt strap from Toytec that you linked earlier would be a winner. Just ignore the fact they call it a tow strap :p
I have used a similar one for years.

Does your Tundy have a hitch Sean?

One good trick for a strap with a loop at the end is to put it in the receiver and put the hitch pin through the loop.

Works well as long as your receiver doesn't have any sharp edges to cut the strap.

They've had snow in Western Nebraska for weeks now even though it's been clear & dry here. There was a Winter Storm Warning for NE Colorado, SE Wyoming and Western Nebraska (the exact area we were driving through) starting at 3:00pm yesterday. The roads were already questionable in Nebraska and then they got like another foot on top of that starting yesterday afternoon so you can imagine how good the roads were. I saw in Cheyenne that they had I80 closed going West when we went through there so you may want to check on road conditions and closures before you head out because the roads may not even be open. The roads were substantially better here than they were there in the morning so I can only imagine now as they got hit even harder than we did again overnight.

If you want the Cadillac of recovery straps, you want this. It's on my wish list.

You can tie these in a knot, yank vehicles out all day long, take the rope with the compressed knot and whale on it with a ballpeen hammer on a concrete floor for a few minutes and the knot will come out. I've seen it in person.

Thanks for the heads up. I just found some nice DOT sites with cameras. Looks like the roads I need are all open, but the western half of Nebraska is a bit fluffy. The whole storm system seems to be moving NE, which could be fun. Yay for holiday snow driving!

I was looking at that one.

    2" x 20ft... 20,000 lbs rating.

I'm assuming that one has a bit of stretch to it? And would be fine for recovering on the trails?

    Yep, it'll work just fine.
I've never used the actual smittybuilt brand but I have a 20'x 2"x 20,000lb strap, looks just like the one in the pic. I can't remember who made mine.

Eh, I just ordered a 2"x20'x20,000 lbs Smitty Built one. I have to lay my old one out and see how long it is.

It was $4 off and $5 shipping. I'd have paid more in gas to drive to the store and back.
