So one of my buddies just picked up a Springfield XD in .40 S&W and we took it down to the range the other day. Basically I think the gun is awesome and want to get one for myself.

I was looking at the XDM in 9mm and was wondering if you guys had any opinions on it. I'm prob gonna go with 9mm because of ammo costs mainly.

I've got about a month left on my pistol permit (90 period in NJ) and the XD series is in my price range of what i can swing now. Originally i wanted a 1911 but those are just too much $$ for me right now and I gotta get something soon.

The Sprindfield XD .40 is an awesome gun. I've had one for a good while now, and I know TacoArk has recently gotten one as well. And I'm sure she likes it.

If I had the chance I would go back and get the XD(M) though. In a .45 cal. But I'm plenty happy with mine.

I'm sure if you get the 9mm you'll enjoy it a lot. :D

My friend and my Dad both have XD .45's one is compact and the other has a tactical. They are freakin sweet. I have never shot thier 9mm but I would assume it to be equally sweet.

    I'm a fan of .40-Used a 9mm and .40 for work...and I always felt more confident after switching the .40.

Springfield are good guns. I used a friends and was really happy with it. I'm paying a few other things off...and then I'm getting one.

the 9mm parabellum is a good round. but i would go with the new XD m thats out. it looks even more awesome than the XD 9. and its got a picatiny rail system under the barrel i believe. for lasers, lights or what have you. no to mention the .45 round

I have a XD9 and love it. My Browning HiPower never comes out of the safe anymore.

I have the XD 40 and love it.

Here's my two cents...Unless you plan on shooting competitively I would not get the XDM just because I really don't think paying the extra money is worth the difference between the XD and XDM, plus for me the XDM with a 5 inch barrel is just too big. Here in TX the XD 9 or 40 is $500 and the XDM is about $650. Here in TX at wal-mart the difference between ammo for the 9 and 40 is about $3. If I were you instead of buying the XDM I would get the XD 40 and use the extra money you saved on ammo. My problem with the 9mm is that everybody always wants something bigger after they get their first pistol.

For some good info check out XDtalk.com

Plus I'm sure PackerfanXD will chime in and provide some good info...

I love my XD .40. It was my first pistol purchase, but i've shot several. I prefer the XD grip over the Glock's. That's what made my final decision. My buddy has the XD 9, which is pretty sweet as well. It's the same gun with a different barrel.

Thanks everyone for your input. I've gotta check out prices around here but this is a very good point. Doing some quick looking at Cabelas it looks like 9mm ammo is about 10 cents cheaper per round compared to .40.

I'm def leaning towards the regular XD now.. I'm still torn about 9mm vs .40. I'm not concerned about knock down power nearly as much as I am about ammo costs. I'll see if another one of my buddies will let me shoot his XD9 to see how i like it compared to the .40

You won't regret it. I sell a lot of the XD line (I'm a dealer) and have yet to receive a single complaint. I myself never cared much for polymer pistols until the XD... I really like the 1911-esque grip angle vs. that of a Glock.

Cool torture test write up on the XD-9:

The XDm is sweet. They need to come out with a compact XDm in .45.

I know you do this sh*t for a living, but I disagree. I prefer the ergonimcs of the XD. The Glock grip angle does not feel as natural to me (opinion). The XD is very similar to a 1911 in that aspect. And the bore is great. I have right around 500 rds through mine and I'm hitting 8/10 in the bull @ 25 ft.
