Adding an additional, aftermarket fuel filter?

I'm wondering if you think it's a good idea to install an additional (not a replacement), aftermarket fuel filter? Has anyone done this?

Do you have a recommendation? I've been looking at some of the fuel filters that are designed for marine applications, and Moeller seems to be a name that's mentioned a lot - http://www.moellermarine.com/aftermarket/fuel_systems/fuel_filters/ . Apparently, the canister type are designed to separate the fuel from any water. Is water (i.e., condensation) a problem with (some) gasoline today?

Moeller makes some interesting points about fuels today - http://www.moellermarine.com/sites/moellermarine/files/mm179_clear_site_flow_rate_met_dyk.pdf

None of those marine cartridge or canister filters are intended to be used in pressure applications unless specified and labeled as such.
Even the few that are pressure rated, are only for low pressure, 20PSI max.

good point, the oil filter type o-ring seal on marine filters may not hold pressure and cause fuel leaks.

just add an extra OEM replacement type fuel filter on the firewall or fender somewhere or something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNIVERSAL-A...Parts_Accessories&hash=item35dfbc21bc&vxp=mtr

With proper maintenance of the fuel system I don't see why another filter would be needed?

because of the dirty gas we get at the pump now days its just good common sense to double filter it so you don't have to pull and replace the injectors when they get dirty.

in a perfect world the one filter would be fine but then you wouldn't need fuel injector cleaners and see people burning up engines with clogged injectors and lean conditions because they are dirty.

Is that because of the local gas stations? Not an issue around here.

people in your area of the country don't get dirty fuel injectors?

if you only knew just how much crap was in any random gas stations tank you would be shocked.

next time you replace a fuel filter cut it open and watch the slimy sludge ooze out lol. you will never think having an extra added fuel filter isn't a vey good idea

My tacoma doesn't have a replaceable fuel filter. It's part of the fuel pump and is considered to last the life of the truck.

I've had cars that Ive put over 200,000 miles on without cleaning the injectors and never had any issues.

Not saying there isn't dirty gas, but never had any issues as long as normal maintenance was followed.

That's certainly worth it if you need to replace the fuel pump.

that's very interesting? so you say the 2013's no longer have the fuel filter on the frame under the drivers seat and they did away with it all together?

I will assume you believe this to be the truth, but I think its very strange they would have removed basic necessary system protections like that.

if it is true then maybe they did it so they can make a lot of money cleaning or replacing clogged injectors every 50k miles or even getting you to buy a new truck due to burned up engines just out of warranty because of it.

There is no external replaceable filter. There is a self cleaning sock filter in the tank that is part of the fuel pump.

There certainly hasn't been any issues with engines burning up.

My 12 doesn't have one either. 70k miles and no dirty injectors or burned up engines. My 06 Corolla didn't have one, 200k miles and no problems, still pulled the same 37mpg every tank as it did from new. Many new vehicles don't have one external anymore. But gas doesn't stay in my tank long enough to go bad.
I just love all the people that jump on the bandwagon that the world will come to the end whenever new technology changes things. I remember people pulling out HEI distributors in the 70's and replacing them with points because the new fangled technology just couldn't be trusted.

its not about the world coming to an end because they change something.

I had a hard time with saying there is no filter because there "has to be" a filter somewhere because dirty gas comes out of the gas pump and goes into your tank.

the answer to this was given by moondeath below

so the filter has been moved inside the gas tank, this "new" design is simply a way to force you to have a shop (they are hoping its the dealer) replace the filter and or pump when it gets dirty.

no big whoopy doo but it does still have a filter, it hasn't been removed, so its a misnomer to suggest it doesn't have a filter.

saying that there was no filter was what I found hard to accept

and obviously its too soon to say there wont be injector issues with these trucks since it will be showing up when they have time for injectors to get dirty after high mileages at 100k-200k miles.

I never said it didn't have a filter. Look at my post that youre referring to.

The filter is an integral part of the pump. It's considered self cleaning from the gas that washes over it.

There hasn't been many issues with people having clogged filters or bad pumps.

Do you really think the engineers sat down and thought "this is how were gonna get those pesky tacoma owners in here. We're gonna completely reengineer the fuel filter just to get a couple more visits at the shop." Seems a bit silly. :tinfoilhat:

what is silly about designing things to break sooner when out of warranty,? companies have been doing this for years.

the internal sock on the fuel pump has been in use for 20 years now so there is no other explanation for removing the external filter that gave added protection for the injectors from getting clogged and preventing engine damage because of clogged injectors so tell me if they invented new gas because the gas is just as dirty today as it has been for the last 50 years where they found they needed these external filters so do your own speculating as to why they decided they no longer wanted this extra engine protection.

I have mentioned the only reason I see makes sense for them to do it, it certainly wasn't because it wasn't needed for extra protection.

there is nothing silly about companies doing things to increase profits and design things so they make you require to use dealers for repairs.

time will tell if this new design is better or worse then having a $15 external fuel filter added to give extra protection to your engine.
