Anyone know if the ignition can freeze on a 4Runner a guy at work can't go home because it won't turn. Key goes in and wiggles but can't get it to turn.

Yeah I tried that . He tried both his keys. Just feels like it's frozen. Seems weird never had that happen to any vehicle.

If it's auto make sure it's all the way in park. Try to turn the steering wheel while turning the ke . If all else fails the tumbler is likely busted & will need to be replaced.

 

What about the tranny? Did it get knocked into gear?

 

Heated it up with a blow dryer and it turned. That was weird.

In my other truck the locks would get frozen every once and awhile.. I would spray WD40 on the key put the key in the lock jiggle it and the lock would unfreeze and open right up....

 

Could've been condensation or the previous owner putting WD40 in it to make it turn better. Car ignitions & locks use a dry graphite for lubrication for exactly this reason. Blasting them with WD40 forever changes this dynamic & should be avoided.

Dry graphite is the worst thing you can use on a lock. That's old and outdated and no longer in practice. When it absorbs moisture, and it will, you get Mojave clay

WD-40 is a water displacement, test #40. It's fish oil and not much else. The heat from your hand on the key most likely thawed the tumbler. WD-40 is good for a temporary lubricant and will keep your locks from freezing but I doubt it will actually thaw it. Unless the can and contents was warm to begin with. WD-40 is not recommended to use in a lock cylinder as it will attract dirt.

Tri-Flow is the recommended lock lubricant these days. I go thru cases of this stuff.

Best way to thaw a frozen ignition or lock cylinder, take a lighter and heat up the key.
